Netherlands Summer ‘23

Hello!
Over some rosé in the garden, we have decided to do the Netherlands as our family holiday next summer. I have three young children (3, 6 & 8 by next year) and with Covid we haven’t done a vast amount of travelling with them.

We are planning a fortnight next August; driving via Calais so very flexible with what we do. Kids are v outdoorsy but also enjoy museums and theme parks etc.

Any must-dos/sees gratefully appreciated!

we just got back from Efteling, had the best time, stayed in a town house in Bosrijk, it was so lovely, the holiday park was the prettiest most peaceful place I’ve stayed anywhere I think, the planting is just gorgeous. If you can do a couple of nights there I definitely would recommend.

If you put "camping" rather than campsite into Google you get a lot more options. Duinrell has good promotional material so looks better when you first click on it, but once you remove the waterpark there are a lot with much more modern toilet blocks and swimming pools included in the price. Almost every village in NL has reasonable public transport

In A,sterdam, the Rijksmuseum does a great treasure hunt. The zoo in Artis is great. Got to take a boat tour. Nemo museum (science museum), is also very enjoyable.
My kids are 12 and 14 and Eftelling is great. Duinrelo is Ok, agree that it is small. Swimming pool is ace though. There are also other theme parks such as Toverland and Wallabiland.
There is a steam train from just north of Amsterdam to Medemblik, then you can take a boat ride over the Ijselmeer. My kids loved it.
Zuiderzee museum is also great for all ages.
All movies are in English with subtitles. Kids movies are sometimes dubbed but you can find the originals.
Limburg is also a great place to visit. There are lots of open spaces. The science museum in Kerkrade is good for kids too. Maastricht is really beautiful.

I love Zeeland - some lovely pretty towns and nice beaches. And www.neeltjejans.nl/en/ park is a good day out. Followed by a nice seafoody lunch across the road. The coast at Scheveningen/Wassenaar is great. Rotterdam is nicer than it sounds. Prefer Leiden to Amsterdam for a windmill and a boat trip.

www.beeksebergen.nl/en is cool too.

Also look at Roompot.com for accommodation.

We had a lovely hot holiday in the Canaries this year but I have to say we came back discussing the relative convenience/calm/coolness of a ferry holiday to NL next year! We loved Duinrell when our kids were really little but they'll be 7 and 9.5 next year so will look at the Efteling. We liked Scheveningen (good aquarium there for rainy days) and Leiden.
