Upset with UK weekend aways

To feel completely deflated with British weekend aways…

I don’t mean to come across as ungrateful especially considering with what is going on at the moment with all the travel in the airports! This is one reason we booked a weekend away in the UK, just can’t win.

Everywhere and I mean everywhere is now totally understaffed. Prices have gone through the roof. Me and DP ordered a coffee and a tea- £9. X3 different places were working out between £9-£16 for just a tea and coffee. Weather crappy also Sad
Everywhere also adds service charge.

I just wanted a little break while we could and we’ve had the worse time really. We are on our way home tomorrow and back to normality Sad

Sounds idyllic! Middle of October is one of the weeks we go away each year as we prefer quieter times. Is there anywhere in specific you would recommend staying in Cornwell?

Don't get me wrong I love eating out and happy to pay decent money for good food but it's not a deal breaker for me on holiday. Unless we're in the Lakes as we absolutely love Porto in Bowness!

St Mawes is wonderful. Devoran is pretty too. Any little village on the South Coast! Friends love Praa Sands. We are north coast. I would avoid Newquay and St Ives gets very busy. Padstow too. Rock is overrated but so many lovely areas on the north coast too. Around Boscastle is worth a look. Look at books about Cornwall and see what you like. Gardens, houses, beaches, walks, birding etc.

Thought of this thread today, as we are away on holiday in Wales.
Had a latte today in the sunshine - £2
Had a pot of tea (2.5 quite big cups out of it) yesterday - £2
Had a lovely pot of tea Saturday - a decent size pot each, with 2 teabags in each pot) plus jug of milk plus pot of boiling water to top up the post - £1.95 each.

All in touristy places.

I think you have generalised somewhat. I consider this to be excellent value Smile

I travel a lot in the UK- for business and leisure. There’s been a huge drop in standards and a hike in costs. I stayed in four hotels in May -in 3 out of 4 the bed wasn’t made properly. Sheets didn’t cover mattress, bottom sheet not tucked in, non matching pillows. (Top marks to Aberdeen Residence Inn for 100% perfection in everything). Usually had to ask more than once for tea/toast when it’s not self service.

I’ve tried to book my usual hotel in Leeds for a business trip - twice the price as previously -been going for 3 years now. Recent trip to a touristy place with family and hotel restaurant closed due to lack of staff - have to get GCs kitted out in outdoors gear to trek to offsite restaurant to use vouchers.

Got a train recently which was so full there was nowhere to store luggage, seat reservations systems had failed, and tour groups were getting on to find no seats. What a dreadful advert for the UK.

It’s dire. It’s a national problem and tourism is an important contributor to our economy. I have every sympathy with hotel owners/cafe owners/self catering places. Brexit or Covid - whatever the cause we have to sort it.
