My dd has identified Dublin as place with cheap flights in August - accommodation though?

She asked me if I'd ever been when I actually commuted weekly whilst pg with her ;) I had a flat in Ballsbridge for the first part and then lived in the Four Seasons for the 2nd part, so cheap accommodation suitable for 4 bargain loving 18 year olds is not my forte. Any ideas? I;ve been looking on booking.com but would there be student accommodation available in the summer?

Dublin is an awful place now, mean streets and the airport is worse than ever.

could she get a train over to Galway or get a flight to Cork instead?

karalimed · 30/05/2022 22:04

The flights are probably cheap because Dublin airport is a shitshow right now. Stories of people being turned away because they will miss their flights even though they arrived 2-3 hours early and security won't be able to process them in time.

Longdistance · 30/05/2022 22:06

My friend was delayed yesterday at DUB. He had to pay for another flight which was 7 hours later. Very costly for him. Shitshow is putting it mildly.

MaraScottie · 30/05/2022 22:09

I'm Irish, and while I love Dublin, it's a bit of a mess at the moment. The airport will be sorted by then I'm sure, but affordable accommodation will be impossible unfortunately. August is super peak season too and all cheap options will already be booked up - it's just ludicrous.

If I was your daughter I'd consider some of the other cities though, Cork or Galway are a 2/3 hour train journey and could have better options, though not guaranteed!

Fizzgigg · 30/05/2022 22:11

Can't help with accomodation but make sure she doesn't need to rent a car of they're travelling out of Dublin. Car hire is insane. We're being quoted €4,000 for 2 weeks I. August (I'm from Dublin and heading over to see family for first trip since Covid)

Palavah · 30/05/2022 22:13

If she's prepared to brave the airport, then youth hostel, plus get a hire car to go down the coast.

CornishPorsche · 30/05/2022 22:15

We stayed at the Travelodge at Rathmines a few years back - took the bus from outside the hotel into the city centre for a couple of Euros and taxiied back at night.

Not the best hotel, but somewhere cheap to get your head down.

SarahDippity · 30/05/2022 22:19

Yes, DCU, TCD and UCD all do short lets in the summer months. These generally won’t be available when they have large academic conferences in; she might be lucky on dates though.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 30/05/2022 22:20

More than a thousand people missed their flights at Dublin Airport yesterday because of how long it was taking to go through security. Maybe they'll have got it together by August or maybe they won't. Is it worth the risk?

Generally speaking the student accommodation connected to universities is used for summer student programmes. I can't think of anything that's cheap in Dublin at the moment, especially not accommodation of any type.

Radyward · 30/05/2022 22:23

Some of the college accommodation is being allocated to people fleeing the ukraine war so might be full.a group of 18 yr old will die of shock at the cost of drinks / meals etc galway is fab but not near an airport .i think they are mad coming to dublin as it will be extortionate

Lesina · 30/05/2022 23:07

Belfast is a much better option. Smaller, friendlier and great craic.

DeliaOwens · 30/05/2022 23:27

OP, your DD should avoid Dublin for the foreseeable,..as many have said...it is a mess. Go elsewhere, Cork or Belfast would be good substitutes

Apparentlystillchilled · 30/05/2022 23:35

I live in the UK but am in Dublin atm, visiting family. All the talk is about chaos at the airport. And then newspapers are full of talk of hotels being ££££. If I were your daughter, I’d head to Galway.

3luckystars · 31/05/2022 05:37

I agree.

schnubbins · 31/05/2022 06:34

There is nothing cheap in Dublin at the moment. We went last minute at Easter to visit family with the plan to rent a car and drive to Kerry and then on to Waterford .The quotes we got for the rental car were upwards from Euro 200 a day totalling out at Euro 5,000 for two weeks .The Hotel a well known chain in Dublin was Euro 200 a night and as luck would have it all the family in Kerry including my parents got Covid .I asked at the reception to extend by a night and that cost us Euro 350 without breakfast "because it was Saturday night'.Thankfully my friend took us in for a couple of nights and we used taxis , the train and buses to get around .Ireland is shooting itself in the foot right now with regard to tourism and pricing .

3luckystars · 31/05/2022 10:30

Just Dublin. The rest of the country is lovely!

Galway is an hour by car from Shannon now.I think it's about an hour and a half by bus.

Cork also has an airport and is a fantastic city.

Blackbirdblue30 · 31/05/2022 11:40

I live in Dublin. As pp have said, it's turned into an absolute mess and I don't see that changing soon. Even sub-standard accommodation will be extortionate. Airport not functioning as an airport at the moment. Very expensive to have a decent night out. Hardly any taxis. City centre filled with addicts and gangs of violent feral teenage boys. I'd go to Galway, or up to Belfast, for a much better experience.

Radyward · 31/05/2022 21:06

What feral young boys !! Omg .havent been up to the big smoke for an evening out in a while.was thinking of dragggimg DH up for a look around arnotts later saturday afternoon followed by a nice dinner somewhere but might give it a miss now.

MissAmbrosia · 31/05/2022 21:58

Thanks for all the advice! I've suggested it might not be the best choice. We're not in UK and the others are french speaking. I said maybe it's better to spend more on travel to somewhere where food and accommodation is cheaper. But it's their trip so I guess I have to butt out to a certain extent. I will check my travel insurance though - I think/hope she is covered to travel without me.

They now look at Barcelona - with an eye on the cheapness, flights very late/very early and no luggage. I am doing a lot of eye rolling.

rhetorician · 01/06/2022 21:59

I live in dublin. I travel through the airport about twice a month (elderly mother lives alone in London). I've had no difficulty bc I fly mid week and not early mornings. But there is nowhere to stay - it's a real problem. And lots of people stopped going in post covid - suburbs are thriving. There is still plenty to do and see though but the city is at risk of strangling itself through greed, sadly

TheRoadToRuin · 02/06/2022 16:22

Barcelona is also struggling with airport and is outrageously expensive.
Since they were looking at Dublin I guess weather isn't important.
DS has just booked flights to Krakow and an apartment for 2 people for £450.
