Hello wonderful vipers. Im off to York with 10 and 14 year old for few days. Any top tips/ cool places to eat/ things to see. They don't fancy Jorvik but pretty open to other ideas. Hit me with your quirky stuff - got a car so also happy to drive about. Thank you!!

This is an excellent timed thread as just booked our Airbnb and trains due going in August!

For the train museum, can I ask people how long they stayed in there? My 5yr old son does love trains 😊 we often visit the London transport museum and spend a couple hours there (mainly as he knows the bits he wants to see there now!) but trying to gauge how long we'd be in the train museum....

And the same for anyone who went to DIG, how long did you spend in there?

My two loves The Chocolate Story when we went.

Also recommend doing one of the York Treasure Trails. You can print them off at home.
Though in fairness I recommend them for any new place you’re visiting.

My DS who is train mad could easily spend a whole morning or afternoon at the NRM despite having been there 20 or so times. For the casual fan an hour or so would suffice. There’s a lot there to be fair and a little play area outside too. I like the warehouse bit full of random train memorabilia like signs and models of planned tracks - that’s a little museum in itself. And there’s a big model train layout that fascinates kids for ages.

@Suzysuz We spent a half day at the train museum - probably around 4 hours. DIG is about an hour.

Where are you staying?
If not city centre, then I recommend park & ride season ticket. Cheap and easy.
We were there for a week and got a York Pass which gave entry into loads of attractions. But it's only worth it if you'd visit those attractions in the first place.
Mad Alice walk is the best ghost walk we've ever done. Hilarious.
Chocolate story was great, walls walk was really good too.

@Suzysuz DIG is a structured thing for the first hour and then you can spend time looking at the displays but my kids were ready for the next thing by then.

You can book afternoon tea in a train carriage at the Railway Museum.

So we'll be in an Airbnb about 5min walk from the train station which is central for pretty much everything it seems 😊 and weekdays so no worries on weekend hens/stags

Just me, my mum and my 5yr old son, so was thinking:

Arrival late morning - double Dutch pancake house, boat cruise, wander

Day 1 - train museum all AM, Betty's tea house, mini golf

Day 2 - DIG, chocolate museum tour

And some bits my mum may venture for a little wander herself 😊 we'll wander the shambles too.

Then we're off day 3 morning.

As well as all the things already mentioned, there are often street entertainers doing things like magic shows and juggling, that can last up to half an hour or so.

If you particularly want to see this, phone ahead to check it's open as it was closed the last time we were there (a couple of weeks ago).
