Anyone had any recent experience travelling from the UK to Ireland with no (child) passport? Fast track one due to be delivered by last Weds latest, still no sign of it and Passport Office have been beyond useless!

Yes, they can travel on their birth certificate as along as traveling with parents.

We travel back and forth to Dublin regularly via Cairnryan/Belfast. Never get asked for a passport on that route as it's within the UK, then just cross the border and obviously no checks on the island itself

Dilemma22 · 24/05/2022 21:23

Which airline did you use?

We're in Ireland now from England. Travelled by ferry. We've travelled through the ROI and NI and no passport checks at all.

Who are you flying with? If Ryanair, you need a passport. If Aer Lingus, they will accept a birth certificate. Legally you don’t need a passport to travel between UK and Ireland, but different airlines impose different additional requirements.

Sorry to butt in, but can you fly to Belfast without a passport?

MoonGoon · 24/05/2022 21:31

I flew from Dublin to Heathrow and back using a driving licence as I'd forgotten my passport.
Probably best to phone the airline.

You can fly Aer Lingus or come in on the ferry without passport bit Ryan Air insist on them

Yes, I usually fly between Belfast and London with just my driving license (and am rarely asked to produce ID at all ) but do double check the requirements of whichever airline you’re flying with.

Thanks, I currently just have my driving license.

any airline but Ryanair is fine with the birth cert! Or by boat. Took our baby by boat a few months back and flew back with BA

Dilemma22 · 24/05/2022 23:14

Thanks all. Booked with Ryanair, seriously regretting it as now will have to fork out an extra £500 odd to go with Aer Lingus instead (plus paid £130 for fast track passport that hasnt arrived)! Grrrr!

Yeah it’s annoying we lost our Ryanair flights too due to passport not arriving! But we just booked rail sail instead for 100£ and sucked it up (my husband still goes ok about it though that we lost the money on the original flights ahhahaha)
