Billund Denmark...how much to budget?

Hi
I have just booked a short (3 night) break in Billund staying at Lalandia for the end of August to celebrate DS GCSE results. Planning on visiting Legoland and the labour house and Billund itself.
I keep reading that Billund/Denmark is expensive for food. How much would you suggest o budget per day? Will be myself and ds 16 and dd 13. Planning on taking breakfast food with us and there is a kitchen in the place we are staying but don't necessarily want to cook every meal!

Also I know dc might be considered 'too old' for Legoland but ds has just based his whole photography gcse around lego and it's on his bucket list to go!!

@Favouritefruits the food was really lovely I will admit I was surprised! The choices sounded a bit random and you could have ordered a strange combination but it was nice. We were also given a bread basket and told that if we were still hungry we could order any of the sections other than the meat again as was all included in the price...they made it very clear any extra wouldn't arrive by robot though to prevent waste!

Not sure if you can read the menu but these were the choices.

It looks great, thank you for your posts. You've inspired me! I want to take my boys. Would you say a long weekend is enough or too much time to spend there? Thanks x

A long weekend is just right - apart from the Lego House and Legoland, there's not too much more to do in Billund.

Ryanair has winter departures from Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham and Stansted - but they're not much use as winter is not really the time to visit Legoland (although the Halloween weekend is good) and both attractions have limited opening hours in winter. Hopefully Ryanair might keep Billund on the summer timetable as well for the other UK airports and not just Stansted. BA also fly to Billund and the hotels, Legoland and the Lego House are all close to the airport.

From Stansted we've often taken the Friday evening departure and stayed for the weekend at the Zleep Hotel, next to the airport. It is clean and well-priced and has a great breakfast buffet, but the Lego Hotel or Lalandia would be better for families with small children. The Sunday evening departure from Billund gives two full days in Billund, so it is possible to have a weekend away without using up any holiday days. We don't think that it costs much more than a city-break or Attraction weekend in the UK - and Legoland Billund is far nicer and less crowded than the one in Windsor (and a flight to somewhere "different" is far more exciting for the kids than sitting in a traffic jam on the M25 or M4).

Anyone interested in visiting Billund should read The Year of Living Danishly

Thank you for the updates. I booked to spend a week there in 2020 but didn’t go. The plan was to drive to the Zoo and some Viking village.

I’m thinking to do 2023 but have already booked something for bank holidays august. It was interesting to hear that it is very quiet after mid august as maybe I can just do a long weekend instead of a week.

For those staying longer than a couple of days I might suggest Givskud Zoo www.givskudzoo.dk/ and Kongelige Vikinger in Jelling en.natmus.dk/museums-and-palaces/kongernes-jelling-home-of-the-viking-kings/ - both attractions less than half an hour away by car from Billund.

It is possible to get two for one tickets on this website for Legoland
www.skolemaelk.dk/legoland-2022/2for1-entrebilletter-til-legoland/

You have to download a document, such as a picture that your child then colours in. You present this at the ticket office at the entrance and voila, a free ticket is yours.

And to add to the nearby attractions for anyone looking for a longer visit:

East of Billund:

Koldinghus Castle at Kolding - about 40 minutes from Billund.

Danish Nursing Museum at Kolding.

Økolariet in Vejle - Excellent ecology exhibition (very interactive for children, including a "ride" through the sewers and live rats)

There are several lovely and very safe beaches in Vejle as well - Albuen Beach (near the big bridge over the fjord) is our favourite. www.visitvejle.com/vejle/experiences/nature/beaches?

West of Billund:

The entire west coast of Jutland is fabulous in the summer. Rent a summer house or apartment and just chill on the vast beaches. Key locations: Henne Strand, Hvide Sande, Blåvand.

Ribe, Tønder, Christiansfeld - old historical towns.

Tirpitz WW2 Museum. Bork Harbour Viking museum.

I’m interested in the sound of the ecology exhibition but can’t stand rats, is it within Billund itself? @Havanananana

The Økolariet is in Vejle - about 20 minutes drive from Billund and easily reached by bus from Billund. The (few) live rats are safely behind a glass partition 😨 It takes about 2 hours to see everything - the day can be combined with time at the beach in Vejle (as above).

Billund itself is really a small town in the middle of nowhere - but with a big Lego factory and office complexes, Legoland and the Lego House, plus the hotels etc. (Zleep, Lalandia, Lego Hotel etc.) and the airport to cater for everything associated with Lego. There is enough Lego stuff to see for 2-3 days, but for any longer you'd need to travel out to any of the attractions and towns suggested in the various posts ^^ Alternatively, stay in a larger town or by the beach, and take day trips to Lego/Billund.

Completely agree @Havanananana we are now sat at the airport waiting to come home. We have had a fantastic time but definitely feel like we have 'completed' legoland and Lego house! We will visit again but go to other attractions in the area alongside legoland (which we definitely only need a day for not 2 like this time...I bought a 2 day ticket as am so used to how busy Windsor is!).
Very impressed with how easy the busses were to use as well as how easy it was to walk everywhere once we got to lalandia.
@Favouritefruits I settled my bill on check out this morning and we had used 109 krone of electricity/hot water which I didn't think was too bad however we were very very careful with our usage!

AQUA in Silkeborg is worth a visit. Denmark is general is just a fantastic place to holiday with children. So many good quality, free or cheap (for children), properly interactive/immersive, nature based things to do. The main 'problem' is that they don't show off about them and are therefore hard to find, unless you have inside information.

Thank you @2anddone for all your updates. I am planning to book the Halloween weekend and I have 2 girls (10 and 4 yrs old). At lalandia were credit cards allowed or do they need debit cards? I was hoping they would accept credit cards.

Has anyone travelled during Halloween to lego house? Also is there is a 2 days for price of 1 for lego house?

Thank you!

Hi
just back
I only used a credit card (Halifax-
no fees) everywhere including lalandia. No issue, didn’t even need to use my PIN. Cash is rarely used, except for the bus.

no 2 for 1 offers that I’m aware of for lego house but the legoland and lego house combi ticket mentioned above is a good bet. Lego house does sell out in advance so make sure you book that. And the mini chef restaurant if you want to go there.

@Cheerstolife we used a Revolut card (which has a Mastercard symbol) everywhere except on the bus where we used cash.
Have an amazing time
