Egypt or Cape Verde

Has anybody been to Egypt recently? How did it feel in terms of safety?

Looking on the gov.uk website, both Sharm and Hurghada are Green, but the general warnings around Egypt have made me question safety. The hotels we've looked at look wonderful with plenty to do in the resort, but obviously, safety is my key consideration and I'd be interested to hear from anybody who has been recently on how it felt.

If we choose not to go to Egypt, I've been pricing up Cape Verde. Has anybody been, and have any feedback on there?

Thank you x

I went to Cape Verde and we stayed in Sal. The hotel was nice and plenty of lovely hot beaches. But nothing to do outside the hotel. We ventured into the town at night... totally boring. We tried to explore the town and see what the locals were doing but its just so boring. Also a lot of the beaches have that black sand thats gritty. I wouldn't go back

Egypt is amazing i lived for a time between Cairo and Sharm. Sharm el sheikh is very safe and you can stay in some absolutely stunning hotels very reasonably at the moment while lots of tourists are still hesitant....
Egypt really has something for what ever you want to do... gorgeous hotels with private beaches if you literally just want to be waited on luxuriously in the sun. Trips to Cairo, Luxor, Jordan, Jerusalem if you want to explore and experience history.
The night life in sharm isnt what it was prior to 2015 but its picking back up and you can still have a great night in Naama Bay for a really great price.

If you are young and female yes you may get hassled in Egypt. Its one of the negatives. But its the same in a lot of countries unfortunately. This was worse for me in Cape Verde whilst on the beach in Sal (not private hotel beach the public beach). Hassled to the point i left which doesn't happen in Egypt .

I would never return to Egypt, awful awful place. Harassment (and I've travelled a lot) sickness, daughter feeling unsafe - I could go on!

Would definitely try Cape Verde as heard great things.

Has anyone ever thought about going to the island of Madeira? You would not regret going it’s called the pearl of the Atlantic only 3h 45 minutes away from uk ? Please check it out it’s hot all year round and not much flying time ! Great for kids families and couples , fantastic food you’ll go back every year after that . A truly beautiful place to visit . Plenty to do on the island ,if you love hiking and sightseeing you’ll not be disappointed, night life is great for couples and families they cater for the very young as they do for grown ups ! If you love food this island is definitely a must .

Been to both and felt safe in both as a solo female traveller. Egypt was Dahab (great diving) and Cape Verde, I stayed on Sal. Both great holidays and no sickness, groping or anything other than lovely people.

Sal is lovely and under developed.

Have been to Egypt twice. First time was in 2001 and we did an all inclusive trip with a tour operator so we did the Nile cruise and then a week in Hurghada and a few days in Cairo. Amazing experience but we did get 'holiday belly.

Went to Sharm in 2007 and thought it was a smelly kip to be honest. Never again. Nothing to see or do at all and no history.

I enjoyed my holiday to Cape Verde.
Stayed all inclusive. The food and service was excellent.

The sea is rough. But Sal is calmer than Boa Vista.

It is a developing country so bear this in mind.

There are some decent trips and activities. Book with a local guide as it's cheaper than Tui and they are insured.

Especially Edgar Pires who is situated at the lighthouse in Sal. Lovely chap.

We did a private tour of the Salt Mines, lemon Sharks and a beautiful bay for calm swimming.

Totally worth a visit.

I like Madeira but, unlike a previous poster, I wasn’t particularly impressed by the food. It’s quite often along the lines of meat two veg, some fish, often scabbard fish served with banana, limpets with garlic. Then the standard pizza/pasta offerings. It’s an agricultural island without a particularly sophisticated food heritage.

I've been all over and Egypt is the one place I'd just not be bothered on going back to, so much hassle and terrible food poisoning.
My suggestion would be Aqaba in Jordan, I haven't actually been to Aqaba but I travelled alone through the rest of the country and found it amazing. Day trips to Petra and Wadi Rum would be fabulous.
