Rethymnon Crete-what are the beaches like & is it a good place to take a 3 & 4year old??

I'm racking my brains to find a holiday for all of us.Dh & I like a bit of history, harbours, things to see other than beaches.Of course the dd's like the beach.

I don't want to go to a new resort that is based just around the beach, with little else & Rethymnon seems to look quite promising. The only thing is,I've checked the 'holiday truths' website & some people say the beaches are lovely & sandy, others say it is stoney with sharp grit.Has anyone been who can give me some advice?

Many thanks.

We stayed much further along in Bali (about 45 mins on the bus from Rethymnon). There's Rethymnon itself which is a nice enough town, then a whole stretch of hotels, villas, apartments etc which is sold as Rethymnon but could take half an hour to get in to town. Of course, you may be fine with that - depends on what you're after! From many of the villas though, you have to get over (or rather under) the main road to get to the beach. It was quite busy.

Sand was quite chunky sand if that makes sense, with occasional stones. You'd want to wear flip flops, if I remember rightly.

we went to Rethymnon about 8 yrs ago pre-children. We hate packages but ended up taking one and it was actually quite good. I agree that Rethmynon is quite spread out and we were about half way along in that spread. We were within a 10 min walk from the beach which was lovely and sandy. We took buses into the middle of town to explore the historical bits which was good, but don;t know how you would cope with a buggy- recall lots of taxis. I think it would be a good idea to really research the location of the hotel or accomodation. Some of the ones on the seafront might get rather noisy at night. We were slightly set back from the road and it was flat walking.

One thing I do remember was doing the Samaria walk down a fantastic gorge. it was truly memorable.

Hope that this helps

I was there pre-kids too and the beaches are definitely sandy.
