My passport was issued in Sept 2012 and expires in June 2023. Will it be valid to travel to Portugal in August?! My understanding is that it is but am I wrong? Thank you

No it won't I don't think, it expires in sept 2012 and I think you need 3 months validity on it.

Sorry sept 2022 it expires due to new rules!

Most places require that you have at least six months left on your passport but it will depend on where you're travelling to.
Best to check the FCO website.

Sorry I don’t understand what you mean. Why would the expiry date be different to what is actually stated on passport?

No. It won’t be valid. Hopefully you’ve not booked anything yet - I’m sure you’ve heard about how long some renewals are taking atm

this is from the gov.uk website:

Your passport must be:

Issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)
You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.

I heard something relevant to this on the radio recently, possibly on an episode of Moneybox or You and Yours?

If I remember right, it was that to enter some European countries they need to be within 10 years of issue (which yours will be); and that, separately, they need to have 3 months validity remaining.

But also that a lot of airlines were getting this wrong too.

Seek specific advice!

Your passport needs to be within ten years of issue date and have the extra validity. I understand why you're confused because you ARE within 10 years of issue and have the extra time but if you did have to stay longer than anticipated you move out of the ten year of issue zone! Then it wouldn't be valid.

Personally I would just renew it now then you don't have to stress about whether it is or isn't

I see I cross posted; that difference between issue date and validity is the point; so you might be alright. Hope you can find proper advice to make sure.

@Muchtoomuchtodo explained better than me, your expiry date is basically irrelevant now I'm afraid. Issue date is the key date. I found this out myself and panic got a fast track renewal!

This has been in the news for months - going into years now. Pre 2018 when you renewed your passport, any remaining months on your old one were added to the new one. Now (post Brexit), those extra months aren’t valid. The passport is only valid for 10 years from the issue date.

No, it’s not valid - the passport expires September this year, and there’s not three months between the August and September.

Your passport must be: Issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the 'date of issue') valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the 'expiry date')

Your new expiry date for Europe is 10 years from the issue date (I.e. September 2022). I would renew especially as some airlines are then saying you need the 3 months validity to be within 3 months of that new expiry date i.e. June 2022. (although i think that's not how the guidelines are supposed to be interpreted)

It was the case that some airlines were misinterpreting the rules and thinking the 3 months had to be within the "new" expiry date, but they were wrong. The Foreign Office has now updated its advice
www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/foreign-office-passport-validity-europe-travel-b2077606.html

And the OP's passport is valid:

  • it's issued less than 10 years before the date of entry
  • it's expiry date (the actual one) is more than 3 months after the date the OP leaves (assuming the OP isn't planning to stay several months)

This has had a lot of news coverage recently. Your passport is valid for 10 years from the issue date. Any extra months added on to the end because you renewed it early don't count any more.

Just to add to above. We applied for DPs replacement passport on 5th May. Straightforward renewal, as had expired, done online.
They received his old passport on 11th May.
New passport hit the doormat today.
So 12 days from application.
No fast track or check and send.
His went to Bootle.
