Tell me about Danish beaches!

Have almost booked a summer holiday to Denmark - flying to Billund.

Want to know which area to look for a holiday home - which coast is nicer? Want a small town within walking distance and the beach too. Have seen a few sweet looking places, like Fano, and Ebeltoft - can anyone recommend any lovely locations not too far from Billund. Ideally a sea the kids can paddle in, not huge waves!

The Baltic coast might have more sheltered beaches.

The beaches on the west of Jutland are lovely, but are quite cold and are the North Sea- so Fano I think would be fairly similar. Ebeltoft is a lovely place on the other side, so more sheltered and also near to Aarhus and a few other places to visit too. It's a little bit out of the way though.

The bit where Sonderborg is has nice beaches and you can also get to Aero for a day trip too. Or actually get to Aero- Aeroskobing is lovely.

The other place we have been is Marielyst in Falster, although we found it a bit too quiet here and full of German nudists. (This was pre-kids, it's probably perfect for young families, and I think it's near a big water park place). We also liked the beaches in Copenhagen but this is definitely nor quiet village, although there's lots to do.

I'm guessing 'child friendly' in the descriptions means fewer German nudists?

Thank you so much for all this great info - I like the sound of Sonderborg - whereabouts did you stay? I can't figure out what the area around it is like, and we would like to be walkable to a nice beach.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%B8nderborg
It's a busy town of 28,000 people with a university and port.

This link includes a large scale map showing beaches and hotels, and should give you an idea of distance from beaches.

@BigLittleRedOne I think we stayed in Mommark, but it was quite a few years ago. We drove up from Cuxhaven and were planning on getting the Aero ferry but missed it by about 10 minutes, so had to stay. It was during the 2003 heatwave, so once we put up our tent, we couldn't be bothered to move for a few days. It's been an area I wanted to return to though.
