Hi all,

Going away to the Lake District and would like some recommendations of things to do other than walking!

Food, days out, shopping etc.

Thank you 😊

I remember really enjoying the Windermere Jetty Museum as a teenager (though IIRC it was called the Steamboat Museum then.)

Have also enjoyed (as an adult!) the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway, and the Conniston steamboat, both of which can easily be combined with doing some walking if you feel like it. Conniston also has a interesting local museum, not a whole day's worth by any means, but could be part of a trip there.

Muncaster Castle is good - can combine with a trip on the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway.

Great farm shop and cafe at Low Sizergh Barn.

There's loads of other things to do: Holehird Garden, Acorn Bank, Hutton in the Forest, Lowther Forest, Dalemain, Blackwell, Levens Hall, boat on Coniston, Derwentwater or Ullswater (good to combine with a walk, boat halfway round, walk back), canoeing eg on Derwent Water, Lake District Wildlife Park, Lakeland Motor Museum, lots of NT places (eg Townend, Wray Castle, Sizergh, Wordsworth House, Dove Cottage, Beatrix Potter Gallery), Honister Slate Mine (mine tours, various adventurous sports things), Theatre by the Lake, Rheged (cinema, exhibitions, shops, all in an unusual building). I think we've done all of those over the years except the slate mine as I've not been able to persuade the family to go!

Whenever we’re in the Lake District, we always go to Booths for a food shop. It’s pretty expensive but it sells things you can’t get anywhere else.
For eating out, I’d recommend Hole in t’ Wall in Bowness (fairly close to The World of Beatrix Potter, which I’d also recommend, with or without kids). Our other favourites are the Mason’s Arms at Cartmel and The Queens Head in Troutbeck.

Loads to do in the lakes, also covers a wide area so where are you going to be based? Are you happy to drive/use transport.

Morecambe sea front is very nice with great views of the mountains in the lakes town centre is a bit run down though.
Blackpool well its not for everyone but worth seeing its very Marmite either love it or hate it.

Kids loved Brockhole (kayaking, archery and an amazing bouncy nets thing). Also got a boat trip on Windemere to Lakeshore and had a ride on a steam train.
