Country of birth - England or Britain?

On the form for renewing a British passport there’s a box entitled “country of birth (including UK)”. Do I put “England, UK” or “Britain, UK”? Thanks!

@dumdumduuuummmmm
You are right. I am a British citizen and my country is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Basketet
IME most Scots put Scotland. I'm not sure why there would be a problem with putting England as your country of birth. This one doesn't. City of birth - Edinburgh. Country - UK.

And yet you call yourself a Scot? Or a Briton?

@readingallthebooks The U.K., is a political and sovereign state that consists of four individual countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

BonesJones · 16/05/2022 13:35

I'd put England. Its asking for your country of birth, which is England. I always put Wales. Wouldn't occur to me put anything else! Is it and English thing to put UK for COUNTRY of birth?

"Including UK" means you have to put your country of birth down even if you were born in the UK. Put England or put UK, either is fine.

"Britain" isn't a country, so don't put that...

UK. England is not an independent country, neither is Scotland etc.

More importantly, my friend applied for a passport and put Scotland in a box where she should have put UK, and they sent the form back to her stating that Scotland is not a country please complete form correctly and reapply. So I never mess with bureaucracy!

AnuSTart · 18/05/2022 08:58

Scotland is a country! It's not fully independent sure but it is a country. Good grief.

standoctor · 18/05/2022 09:03

England
All the home nations are separate and have their own rich culture and identity

"England is not an independent country, neither is Scotland etc."

LOL yes it is

BobbinHood · 18/05/2022 09:05

I always put UK. If they want to know which bit of it, that’s what the place of birth (city/town) box is for.

BobbinHood · 18/05/2022 09:05

And it’s a British passport, not an English, Scottish, Welsh or northern Irish passport.

Tarnation · 18/05/2022 09:14

You're reading too much into the question - the "(including UK)" bit is to make sure everyone fills in the question, not just those born overseas. I would put UK, but England would be fine too. Britain would be incorrect, though I expect you'd get away with it.

That must have been a question on citizenship, and she put Scottish when she should have put British, so it was rejected.

rnsaslkih · 18/05/2022 09:40

I would put England. It is a country.

KnitPurlKnitPurl · 18/05/2022 14:37

I am both Scottish and British - despite what the SNP think it’s entirely possible to be both.
