Thinking of this for a trip with friends. Any tips? Best areas for accommodation? Thanks!

For accommodation, you mean in Malaga city itself, or the area?
assuming you’re flying to Malaga?

HumourReplacementTherapy · 15/05/2022 15:53

Malaga the city as a short break is fabulous
It's got everything (bit like a mini version of palma)
We stayed in a fantastic place right in he centre near the cathedral. I've also stayed just outside in one of the resorts (awful) so we bussed it into Malaga each day.

Ok, have visited the city for an afternoon, plenty to see but other pp will know it better.

Cordoba is an hour away by train , it’s moorish history makes it with a visit.
if you’re interested in hiring a car there’s some places inland to visit too.

We’re going for the Jubilee long weekend so watching for any tips. I’ve heard very good things.

CottonSock · 15/05/2022 17:38

I went on a day trip and we walked around waterfront and had a meal. Interesting mix of leisure and working port. Then short walk into town along pleasant paths to the cathedral area which was very pretty. Didn't have time for much more but was pleasantly surprised.

Kings walk is just amazing, you need to book!! Not far from Malaga

Mysterian · 15/05/2022 17:45

The fort on top of the hill is just a fort. Nothing special, although the view is good. The path up to it seems a good idea at first. After half an hour of walking up in the heat a bit less so, and probably a slippy death trap if raining. The moorish gardens (forgot name) are very atmospheric, and the park through the middle is wonderful.

Also, I had fries in the McDonalds that came with (genuine) bacon bits and real plastic cheese! Food of the gods!!!

Stay right in the centre it's gorgeous!!! There's a few hotels right along the main shopping street which is pedestrianised. There are also hotels down by the sea. There is a lovely newly redeveloped harbour walk with shops and restaurants. Also the cathedral etc. jealous.

I'm going to Malaga in October and have booked the Hotel Don Curro as I've been told it's in a great location. MIL is coming with us, she'll be 81 then so we wanted somewhere central.

MinnieMountain · 16/05/2022 10:35

I’ve been for day trips as PIL used to live nearby.

The cafe on the hill just outside the moorish palace is good for a pit stop. And the palace itself is pretty.

There’s a great sherry bar near the market.

We generally look on Trip Advisor for places to eat.

It's also good for a short break after Christmas as the big celebration in Spain is Epiphany (around 5th January) and the Malaga Christmas lights are well worth seeing.

All I know of Malaga is the airport. Blush

However DH retires soon and it is on our list of places to go.

AnotherTroyforHertoBurn · 16/05/2022 10:52

Our next big trip is back to our beloved Nerja in June (will go to Granada) and then we have both taken an flight (pardon the pun) of fancy to go from London to Barcelona by train in the spring.

Breakfast in London

Lunch in Paris

Dinner in Barcelona.

Even if we don't do it, we are getting a lot of fun out of looking at The Man in seat 61 and planning.

Staynow · 16/05/2022 11:02

Malaga is a fab city for a short break but I's really recommend the caminito del rei like a pp (walk of the kings). In that area El Torcal and the Ardales lakes are also amazing - depends how long you have though.

For some reason I am desperate to go to the museum of glass in Malaga.

TheDogsMother · 16/05/2022 11:10

We've had a city break in Malaga and its a great place. We stayed in this boutique hotel right on the sea front and it has a roof top bar and sun loungers. room-matehotels.com/en/valeria

The city is lovely for wandering and has a huge selection of bars and restaurants. This place is is really worth visiting too with fabulous cars, fashion and art on display. museoautomovilmalaga.com/ I would recommend the airport bus as a quick, easy and cheap way to get to the city.

This seems like a good place to mooch for ideas.

Malaga is a fantastic city. Don't miss the Picasso museum. The port area is great for a leisurely walk. Great shopping too!

Kings walk is just amazing, you need to book!! Not far from Malaga

Best to do this as a planned excursion or make own way?

EBearhug · 16/05/2022 11:29

I really like Malaga. Beaches, mountains, art, museums, history, shops. I can't think of anywhere I didn't like in Andalusia.

tanstaafl · 16/05/2022 19:43

@mondayagainyay
We’ve hired a car from Maria Zambrano? Train station and driven to the caminita del Rey start. ( you get a free bus from the end back to the start with your ticket )
then drive to Ronda after.

Nanalisa60 · 19/05/2022 12:01

We had a hired a car for a few days, as we also drove up to Granada and Rhonda both fantastic, the patio festival in Cordobra is also a amazing thing to do but is only on for the first two weeks in May, but Cordobra is another amazing city. But we just loved the kings walk . Once you get away from Malaga which the old town is also lovely the, motorways to the other city’s are really empty compared to the U.K.

Alondra · 19/05/2022 12:12

My fave place close to Malaga is Almunecar (Granada). It's roughly the same distance from Malaga or Granada airports. It's a lovely town, full of people from everywhere in the world but with a very strong Spanish/Andalusian base.
