Hotels in Rome & Venice

We're off to Italy at the start of July. Am looking for mid-range hotels in Rome & Venice - can anyone recommend any?
Also is 3 days in Venice too much?
Thanks!

3 days is not long enough in my opinion!! Definitely at least 6 days in Rome too, there is so much to see.

Three days in Venice is not enough, imo. There is tons to see, especially if you want to visit the islands too. Hotel Giorgione is a reliable mid-range hotel, very close to walk to all the major sites but slightly away from the crowds.

We stayed in The Hive in Rome. Near Termini rail station. Walkable to Colloseum and public transport. I would definitely return.

We really liked this hotel in Venice www.anticodoge.com. We paid for a canal view room, but if I was going again I wouldn't bother as it was quite a bit more expensive and we kept the windows closed so we had aircon.
Having said that I much prefer Rome to Venice. I enjoyed strolling round Venice, but there is just so much to see in Rome that I think a couple of days in Venice is more than enough. It will be very hot in both locations in July so keep that in mind.

We stayed at the Kolbe in Rome. Good location. Pleasant staff. Rooms were fine. Breakfast was good. They have an outdoor area as well that was really nice.

Depends on your budget for Rome, but be careful of being too near Termini, especially at night. Rome hotels in City Centre can be quite small, especially in " older" buildings. Next time I go, am probably going to stick with chains or more modern hotels. A must for Rome in my experience is to be near a metro station ( IMO). Metro is really easy to use and gets you to all the major sights really quickly. You do get hounded by people if you wait in the queues to " fast track " you. Either book online or wait. A room with AC in Rome in July is an absolute must. We went in May and was absolutely boiling.
3 days is not enough to see Venice. You need time to just wander about and " get lost" as well as see the major sights. Also book a room with AC if you can. So hot at night, you can struggle to sleep.
And go to back streets in both Rome and Venice to have your meal. Much cheaper and better quality.

Don't stay near the Termini railway station in Rome!
Hotel Albergo del Senato is good & mid-priced and in a fantastic location by The Pantheon - you can walk everywhere from there and are at the heart of the action. Been to Rome 8 times & never needed to use the Metro.....
Hotel will send a car to pick you up from the airport (for a fee, of course) and also has a nice little rooftop bar.

Take plenty of mosquito repellent for Venice. It has the worst mosquitoes I’ve encountered anywhere in the world.

Obviously you don't NEED to use the Metro in Rome,as Rome is reasonably walkable but I found it useful, especially in blistering Roman heat , when it can be exhausting, especially if you have been walking about all day. One of the lines has a station right at Spanish Steps , next stop Trevi Fountain and 2 stops further is Vatican. The other line goes to Colloseum.

Rome - we usually stay close-ish to Termini but towards Colosseum/ Trevi etc so we can walk everywhere. (Arriving by train).
In Venice, I have stayed at the Giorgione- which was ok but mind they don't give you a ground floor room! In fact avoid any ground floor rooms in Venice - noisy and close to rats!
