Can't afford a holiday

cantaffordahol · 10/05/2022 19:03

Really pissed off. Was hoping we could get away this year. We managed to go on Eurocamp in Spain in 2019. Nothing 2020 and a short break camping in 2021.I have health issues and struggle with camping. We just don't seem to have any disposable income for holidays with everything going up.
We could probably scrape maybe £ 700 for a holiday for 2 adults 2 kids aged 10 and 7. However, we only have annual leave in August and is the only time we can go.Had a look and even a caravan holiday is coming out at over 1k for a week.
What on earth can we get with £700 for a week in August? Any ideas on cheap holidays with kids appreciated. Need to find spending and fuel money as well ☹️

I do Premier Inn holidays, long day trips and go and stay with friends with the DC and have them to stay with us so it gives it a holiday vibe. If we do stay at home, we eat out more so we don’t have the hum drum of cooking.

We stayed here a in 2019..Great base for north wales...705 for week I August

I haven’t checked the affordability of most of these, but a farm stay where you actually do some work ought to be cheaper than a normal holiday. (Was surprised to find that Farm Stay only involves staying on farms not working on them.)

Anyway, you may be able to find other examples.

We are driving m to London (300 miles) for a 3/4 days, staying at a premier inn and going to a theme park one day and a couple of other attractions. It will cost around £700 all in and will feel like a break away.

Lancashire!

How about Southerness holiday park? Not too far for fuel costs but a completely different feel. Nice pool and if budget allows the chocolate factory near by do kids workshops!

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 10/05/2022 19:50

If you go towards end of August Scotland might be doable, as their school holidays tend to end mid August. We stayed in St Andrew's last year, which had a smallish beach, a fab park, woodland walks, and was a good base for touring around. Good luck.

Sportycustard · 10/05/2022 19:52

If you're in Lancashire try looking at Scotland later in August (as their schools go back earlier than English schools).

I've just found some good options on cottages.com for late August for under £600.

Gottoomuchgoingon · 10/05/2022 19:52

Check out UK caravans for hire.
Privately owned caravans in all the popular parks. We've booked for Tenby in half term for less than £600

cantaffordahol · 10/05/2022 19:54

I have from the 20th-27th august for annual leave so Scotland would work!

Definitely Scotland in August as it's cheaper, saw some lovely cottages in your budget on airbnb

P0larexpress · 10/05/2022 20:04

I think you will be able to get a few days in Scotland in an Airbnb or caravan for that budget.
Scottish schools will have gone back!
Take your own food with lots of treats thrown in.

We really enjoyed our holidays to southerness. Pre-covid I took my children last minute to butlins every august. Phoned on the Sunday to go on the Monday. Never paid more than £600. Twice we got that price catered.

SmellyWellyWoo · 10/05/2022 20:18

Loads to do in Lancashire and areas within easy reach- various seaside resorts, Lake District, Liverpool, Manchester, Yorkshire etc.

SmellyWellyWoo · 10/05/2022 20:19

Is £700 your total budget- including food, fuel etc?

Bearsan · 10/05/2022 20:19

You can afford at least 4 nights possibly 5/6 in a seaside b and b in a family room in lots of places.

fruitpastille · 10/05/2022 20:24

What about going for 4-5 nights instead? You could do a chalet in France if you don't mind the drive then you have hopefully better weather and an outdoor pool for the kids. We use Tesco points for the eurotunnel. Even better if you have any family or friends who live in Kent who would let you stay overnight on the way.

@cantaffordahol Can do a week in France with Eurocamp for under 700 at the end of August.

This one is a hop and skip from Calais and is 679 for your dates (if go for 5 or 6 nights instead, will come down accordingly) www.eurocamp.co.uk/campsites/picardy/pc011-la-bien-assise/ataglance.html

Nootkah · 10/05/2022 20:32

@cantaffordahol 5 nights from 22nd is only 485 at Bien Assise

we’ve been here , it’s quiet, but a there’s lovely big beach and it’s a great base for exploring Northumberland.

Kendodd · 10/05/2022 20:39

If you've been to France fairly recently, that might suggest you all have passports? Have a look at skyscanner OP, you can get flights to Europe for £50 each (or less) . Go somewhere cheap for a few days. I bet you could bring that in for £700 total for three nights away including spending money. Plus it sounds like it might be your children's first time on a plane?

Unihorn · 10/05/2022 20:44

We used Clubcard Vouchers for travel (P&O ironically but Eurotunnel also possible) and then got Blue Light discount off both Eurocamp and Canvas Holidays. If you can do all your shops and petrol in Tesco until August you may get a couple of quid off transport. We paid £240 for a week in Easter in a French camp.

European holidays seem to end the week or two before UK holidays, so it might work out cheaper to look at somewhere in North France/Netherlands/Belgium at the end of August so you're not spending a fortune on fuel.

MissBattleaxe · 10/05/2022 20:45

We've been in this position a lot so we an a couple of amazing days at the zoo or a beach with a pub meal on the way home andwe still talk about these memories. You don't need to be overnight to make great memories. Our kids seem as happy with a pub meal and a flashy dessert as they do with four days in a self catering caravan.

tootiredtospeak · 10/05/2022 20:48

You can get something for that price easy. I have just booked my sister in law on our Wales holiday last week of August 2 bed apartment so kids would need to share 742. Just looked and found something in Staithes near Whitby. In Pickering where you could access all the North Yorkshire coast. Loads in Wales.
