Munich and another German city or Salzburg: Hotels and things to do?

Hi

So planning a trip to Munich in July for about 6 or 7 nights. I've booked Motel One Sendlinger Tor for the 1st 3 nights.

It has no availability for the following 2-3 days so trying to either find a nice hotel in Munich for rest of trip or was thinking go to Salzburg for a night or two. Then back to Munich.

Or skip Salzburg and travel to a different German City no more than 3/4 hours by train from Munich.

I'm pretty flexible with plan, been wanting to go to Munich for years so definitely want to start off there for few days.

Budget for hotels is €150-200 a night. Safe area, pretty central or near metro/public transport, nice Breakfast or good nearby cafe.

Any other tips and ideas very welcome!

We went to Nuremberg and Munich over the Easter holidays and had a lovely time. I don't know Salzburg, but it's very popular (which can be both a positive and a negative).

Thanks that's good to know, did you do a day trip to Nuremberg or stay there? Any recommendations for access

We stayed there - 4 nights in an airbnb in the old town. Did day trips to Bamberg and Playmobil fun park (absolutely fantastic if you have pre-teen DC).

It’s been many years since I was in Salzburg but I remember it as a fantastic place, and one I keep meaning to go back to. The Mirabell Gardens are lovely and Hohensalzberg (if I’ve spelt that correct) was interesting and picturesque.

Enjoy your trip, Munich is a great place.

Will you have a hire car? We did a holiday along the Romantische Strasse a few years back, staying in places like Dinkelsbuehl and Rothenurg an der Tauber for a couple of nights each.

I wasn't planning to hire a car but not adverse to the idea. This is a solo trip so probably wouldn't do something with a lot of driving as it's just me. Though might get one for a day or two to visit some stuff not convenient by public transport.

I've booked flights today. Flying into Munich on a Monday and flying out of Frankfurt Friday of thr following week (so have 11 nights total).

Current plan is 3 full days (4 nights) in Munich, middle of trip undecided, and last 2-3 days in Frankfurt.

Would love to do Salzburg and Nuremberg but not sure if would be better to just do one or the other lol!

Nuremberg is on the way to Frankfurt. Salzburg is in the other direction, if it makes a difference.

I had a side trip from Munich to Zurich for a concert. Train was disrupted due to works so took the Flixbus. Very good and reasonable service. Kunsthaus Zurich is v good.

Or I can really recommend this Airbnb staying really near the Pinakotheks

The family are lovely.

All the suggestions here are great ideas. You soecifically mentioned train connections which I cant comment on but there are some great long distance bus routes from Munich. Innsbruck, Zurich and even Prague would fall in to your criterea of a 4 hour journey.

My personal favourite and a tip if you are looking for something a bit different is South Tyrol- the German Speaking region of northern italy. The main cities and Bozen and Meran also called Bolsano and Merano. Its an area with some lovely scenery and interesting history. Great for hiking with a mixture of routes for all abilities.

Add in schloss neuschwanstein as a day trip, it’s amazing!

I know Salzburg well.

The style of hotel in Salzburg popular with tourists is the olde inn type places. Personally, I am not a drinker so I prefer the modern, cleaner looking hotels. Once, we stayed at the Hofwirt which literally beside the entrance to the cobbled, traditional area. It was a lovely hotel and very reasonable for the standard of accommodation with a fabulous organic pizza place across the road.

Salzburg tourism is focused on Mozart (predictably) and The Sound of Music but there are also a lot of classical music events held in beautiful buildings and a big festival once a year. There is also a lovely market and the most amazing cafes.

Soffit · 03/05/2022 21:13

You can also go on a trip right down into the salt mines and visit Hitler's summer residence (Eagle's Nest).

If you want to stay in Munich and in the Sendlinger Tor area try Hotel Altmünchen which is just across the street from Motel One, it's not posh but clean and good value for its excellent location.Otherwise I would take a trip to Bamberg or Nürnberg by train or you could visit the lakes at Starnberg or Tegernsee and stay overnight.

reluctantbrit · 05/05/2022 08:23

Nürnberg is great for 2 days but it may be too much for a daytrip. Bamberg is lovely for a day and easy to go to by train from Nürnberg.

It's also on the way to Frankfurt.

AdriannaP · 05/05/2022 08:26

Second Bolzano in South Tyrol, it’s 3 hours by train from Munich. Innsbruck also lovely, about 2 hours by train.

JohannSebastianBach · 05/05/2022 08:32

I'd recommend Salzburg, it's gorgeous. Also the food is much nicer in Austria. I recommend the Stiegel Keller and the Arkadgarten Sternbräu and a trip up on the funicular to the castle. Also pop in to the beautiful church at the Nonberg convent.
Have coffee and cake at Cafe Bazar by the Salzach river.

Train service from Munich Hauptbahnhof is excellent.

MadameDragon · 05/05/2022 08:34

I would definitely go to Bozen/Bolzano

MadameDragon · 05/05/2022 08:34

And Innsbruck over Salzburg any day

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 05/05/2022 08:48

Agree with the suggestions so far. You could also consider Füssen, a couple of hours by train. Even if you don't like walking, you can take a cable car to enjoy a phenomenal view. You can also visit Schloss Neuschwanstein, the fairytale castle that featured in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (suggest you book tickets ahead).

Munich is fab. We found some lovely restaurants around the Viktualienmarkt (a food market).

Soffit · 05/05/2022 09:40

Yes to Schloss Neuschwanstein, i could visit weekly forever. I never realised the film link. The real story behind it is compelling enough. There is an excellent restaurant at the foot of it.

MMAMPWGHAP · 05/05/2022 22:29

I also recommend Bolzano. You can see Ötzi the Iceman in the Archaeological Museum. He’s really interesting.
