Going to Spain and proving sufficient funds for stay

Have been reading this quite often in the news this week, how now because we're not in the EU we may be asked upon arrival to Spain to prove we have enough money for our stay. And need a minimum of €100 per day per person. How does this work when you're a family ? Or staying all inclusive so don't usually take a whole lot of money just a kind of emergency fund?
I've read stories of people having to get their online banking out or prove they have credit cards etc. A little worrying if I'm honest, we take as much as we need for the stay and that can surely vary between people/families.
So for a 10 night stay between us we'd need €2,000 ! No way we can afford that as spending money

Not for a tourist visit
Visas for short trips: you do not need one if you’re a tourist
If you’re a tourist, you do not need a visa for short trips to EU countries, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein. You can stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

You would if you not British and are going for schenghen visa

Very little written in many newspapers is sufficiently factual to be able to definitively determine what the actual rule is and how it applies to your particular situation.
