Hotel near airport day before flight?

Does anyone do this?

We have one of the first flights of the day and are a couple of hours from the airport. Not sure whether to stay close or on airport so we can sleep a little later rather than get up in the middle of the night and be tired on the day of arrival?

Costs are about £100 on airport or £50 within about 20mins drive.

We're tight on budget so just not sure it is worth it.

I always do it but I'm a single parent and one of my kids is autistic. With two parents, I'm not sure I'd bother.

Wheredoestheblackfluffcomefrom · 25/04/2022 13:13

I do this frequently, lovely to wander around the airport night before then up and at it in the morning. I would t bother with 20 minutes away though, actually airport is best. Check out holiday extras companies a d the company you are travelling with for offers.

sonjadog · 25/04/2022 13:14

I sometimes do this if I have to check in very early. I have also sometimes got up very early to travel to the airport directly. It really depends on what time you have to check in, if you can afford it, etc.

sonjadog · 25/04/2022 13:15

I always stay right by the airport if I do though. If it were a twenty minute drive, I'd probably not bother.

Alwayspaintyournails · 25/04/2022 13:17

We vary it depending on circumstances…

Only a few days away definitely stay on site night before.
Long drive to airport definitely stay on site the night before.
Mediocre drive for week or fortnight’s holiday I would just drive to the airport.

I don’t see the point in staying 20min away tbh.

aeroport · 25/04/2022 15:38

It's a week away. I'm quite happy to be tired on the first day of holiday as we will just laze about anyway but I'm not the one driving so need to take that into consideration.

You can sometimes get the hotel with a week's parking (at the hotel) for the same price as airport parking. We often do that as the hotel pays for itself.

If you're going to do it, be on airport; it's not worth it if you are 20 mins away as you'll still find yourself building in stupid amounts of extra time for traffic, parking issues etc......

thirstyformore · 25/04/2022 15:50

Was just about to post exactly what @Tarnation said. If you're paying for parking anyway you might find a good deal with an airport hire. We recently paid £150 for a night at a radisson blu right at the airport. It was only £10 more than a cheap premier inn a few miles away with parking at the airport.

Hbh17 · 25/04/2022 15:50

Always, and use the hotel parking. Just makes life so much easier.

rookiemere · 25/04/2022 16:34

Depends on a couple of things. How long is the drive? Anything less than an hour or so I'd just do on the day as I find airport hotels generally overheated and noisy.

How early is the flight and how much is priority through security? These days I like to get to the airport 3 hrs in advance because of concerns about queues. I guess if you were in a hotel though you could monitor the live board online for timings, but you'd still need to be awake just in case of issues.

bellamountain · 25/04/2022 16:44

We are doing it this year even if the airport is only 30 minutes away. We have little kids and a very early flight. I'd also like to make sure the house is secure rather than rushing out the door on the day.

Cheeseandlobster · 25/04/2022 16:45

I have done it when travelling by public transport as its impossible to make it to the airport otherwise. If money is tight though and the driver is OK with it then I would just leave from home as effectively you are paying the money to only gain 2 hours (unless airport parking is a long way). Can't you all go to bed extra early? I have a 7am flight soon 2 hours from home. I will try to go to bed at 8pm, up for 1am then also try to sleep a bit on the plane.

Plus you also have to unpack toiletries, pj's etc. When you go from home everything is packed and you just use your toiletries in your bathroom.

CuddlyCactus · 25/04/2022 16:49

We regularly fly from an airport 2.5 hours away. If flight is before lunchtime we always stay at airport premier inn. Takes away the stress away n morning, and no need to leave extra early just in case get a puncture etc
Put car into car park night before and leisurely stroll or shuttle to airport in morning

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 25/04/2022 16:49

What time is the flight? 6am flight, have to be there at 4am, so leaving g at 1am... not worth going to bed!

I always sleep terribly before an early flight as scared of missing the alarm.

gogohm · 25/04/2022 17:13

I've done it but it's not necessary, all depends on how far you need to travel I would say

MinglingFlamingo · 25/04/2022 18:10

We always do this! Our decent nearest airport is 2 hours away so if you add on 2.5 hours for checking in etc... im not ruining the start of my holiday by getting up super early when I could have a couple more hours sleep at a hotel nearby

Clymene · 25/04/2022 18:24

I agree it's about the time of the flights and the stress and everything else. EasyJet allow you to check in bags the night before after 8pm so if you have an airport hotel you can just stroll over after dinner, check in and then snooze.

The other thing to consider is traffic. I have to go on the M25 to get to Gatwick and I've been stuck in appalling traffic after an accident more than once. Not having to worry about missing a flight when that happens really takes the stress away.

Troublesometooth · 25/04/2022 18:27

I always do it. I don’t want to risk my holiday by the car breaking down on the way to the airport!

Verite1 · 25/04/2022 18:42

We always do it, but stay at airport hotel.
