City break for craft beer fanatic

pinacolada321 · 23/04/2022 09:09

Can anyone recommend a European city destination for a craft beer lover? DH is really into craft beer, when we went to London a few years ago we went to Bermondsey Beer Mile and he loved chatting to fellow beer lovers and trying the different beers.
Does anyone have any first hand experience of places they would recommend? When i search online the usual places like Munich, Prague and Brussels come up but i would love to hear some first hand recommendations
TIA

Bruges. Amazing beer, great food, chocolate everywhere you turn, and a gorgeous place to stroll around. One of my favourite city breaks ever. A couple of days would be fine in Bruges, could always travel to Ghent or Brussels for a day trip if you fancied longer

Bucharest or Cluj, Romania. Both mad about craft beers.

Here in Milan the craft beer movement has exploded, there are micro breweries popping up all over the place, I think there's over a 1000 in Italy now. The Navigli canal area of Milan is lined with pubs and cocktail bars. Here's an example of one www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g187849-d15758365-Reviews-Navigli_Craft_Beer-Milan_Lombardy.html

As pp said Bruges Beer your is fab. And Bruges generally is just delightful.

comfortablyfrumpy · 23/04/2022 09:25

Bruges would be a good start.
Fantastic range of bars.
Good brewery tours.
Lots of other stuff to see and do.

But loads of other Belgian cities and towns will make a good base for a beer-related break.

Ooh following as we are on the lookout for something similar. Xxx

comfortablyfrumpy · 23/04/2022 09:28

Pp mentioned Gent - also lovely base. If you go, do pop into the Dulle Griet. For some beers you have to deposit a shoe ...

Bruges was my first thought. We went to a beer cellar called Trappist where you can order a rack of mini beers so that you can try as many as you want to.

The friends we went with didn't stop going on about Munich and the reason we went to this particular beer cellar was because they wanted to recreate the amazing time they had had in a Munich so I guess that's probably place to go.

ChampagneCommunist · 23/04/2022 09:38

Ghent, on Belgium would be good too

pinacolada321 · 23/04/2022 09:54

The rack of mini beers is call a 'flight' thats as far as my knowledge goes 😂

And we know a couple who recommended Bruges as a city break in general, so i think I'll research it. It would probably only be for 2 maybe 3 nights max

I absolutely love Bruges, we go every couple of years.

But remember many belgian beers are 7%-12%, so you can't drink it like it's a 4% ipa!

We often have a couple at lunch, then have an afternoon nap, then a 2-3 more in the evening.

It's not like drinking pints in the uk, on our first trip we were overexcited and sat in a Bruges bar all afternoon having many beers, then were absolutely ruined the next day.

Lisbon is pretty good for craft beer too. In the uk Bristol and Birmingham are good too.

Let me know if you want bar recommendations and I'll PM you!

AdaColeman · 23/04/2022 10:18

Belgium 🇧🇪 is a beer lover’s paradise. Alternatives to the Belgian cities already mentioned, are Antwerp with its wealth of history and spectacular architecture or consider staying on the coast at Knokke and getting the train to other cities once you have tried all the local bars.

Blueberrycreampie · 23/04/2022 10:24

I seem to remember Tallinn had a great range of beers which were very good value, and it's a lovely city to explore.

gogohm · 23/04/2022 10:37

For proper (non lager) beer the U.K. is far better than continental Europe in my experience. I'm fussy and do not like fizzy lager type beers at all. My recommendation would be a U.K. city - Bristol has a good craft beer scene for instance

LostMySocks · 23/04/2022 10:55

No city suggestions but make sure you understand what is meant by craft beers. In the UK you have real ale type beers and then craft beers which often have very different flavour profiles and may include many flavour twists. Both are equally valid beer types but may appeal to different people. Micro breweries can do both types.

Many of the Belgium beers are usually more of the traditional style (although this is different to the UK styles).

Another Bruges rec here! there’s a fab little craft beer place called Garre and they were great for recommending light beers for me. The % are so high , I can only have a couple! Bruges is fab overall, such a lovely spot for a mini break.

ThisIsTheGreatestShow · 23/04/2022 11:17

Another vote for Bruges here. Beautiful city with loads to see and great food & drink. I'll shoehorn in a recommendation for the very funny and very sweary film In Bruges too 😂

weebarra · 23/04/2022 11:29

Copenhagen was great. There are lots of Danish craft beers like Mikkeller and To Ol.

Wow so much to think about, the beer festival in Tallinn would be his dream but from a selfish point of view I would have to pay for a ticket when I don't actually like beer 🙈 plus they usually don't sell other types of alcohol. At least if we went somewhere that had different bar that also sold wine and cocktails i would be happy!

Does Bruges have a buzzing nightlife, i don't want to go somewhere too quiet?!

I think I'm now torn between Bruges and Copenhagen!

As I remember, yes it does.

Twizbe · 23/04/2022 21:23

Nuremberg for their beer festival in September. Smaller than Oktoberfest and much better beer.

franke · 23/04/2022 21:24

Riga is also a place where craft beers are a thing.

Mufflette · 23/04/2022 21:28

My DP is the same and we both loved Bruges and Copenhagen. I'd say there's more other stuff to do in Copenhagen though, and the beer was more of a mix where Bruges is full on Belgian stuff.
