Playa del ingles - grab canaria

Looking for a family holiday this summer in the canaries. We will be going as a family with 2 dc (7 and 16) but also my parents too. Found a lovely hotel in playa del ingles but my mum thinks it's very much like Magaluf. We are looking for somewhere with shops and restaurants to walk to in the evening and would rather avoid areas with lots of nightclubs etc.
would this resort be ok or should we avoid?

I would avoid, purely because it isn't very pretty. Very concrete. The centre reminded me of a 1960s shopping centre / multi storey car park. Up the road in Melenoras is lovely though. Beautiful sand dune beaches, cafe, restaurants and shops.

I went in 2020 and wasn't very impressed, wouldn't go back. Have you tried Costa Adeje in Tenerife? I really like it- we stay in Playa del Duque and walk 5 minutes down to Torviscas and Fanabe for shops and restaurants, Del Duque has these too but they are a bit posher (and expensive).

Northernsoullover · 09/04/2022 22:42

Its not aesthetically pleasing. Puerto Rico is much nicer.

MossyBottom · 10/04/2022 10:55

It was awful when I went a long time ago. Seedy and grim.
Agree Costa Adeje in Tenerife is fab and would suit all ages from toddlers to teens to grandparents

melanoras/maspalonas were nice when we visited for a day. we stayed at Mogan (the bit by the sea ) which was beautiful. Didnt like costa adeje much - restaurants expensive and you had to book, we also like old town peurto del carmen and playa blanca in lanzarote. or even costa tequise....though not actually stayed there only visited

dreamingofsun · 10/04/2022 11:15

son said playa des ingles wouldnt suit us.....so sounds like rest of posters are correct

Hugasauras · 10/04/2022 11:19

Meloneras sounds like what you're after. Promenade with nice restaurants and mostly families and older couples. Lovely to walk along the beach in the evenings. We've stayed at the Riu there a few times and it opens up right onto the front.

Mogan is nice too.

TippledPink · 10/04/2022 13:59

@dreamingofsun I got back from Costa Adeje two weeks ago, didn't have to book any restaurants at all, just walk in to wherever you want. And the prices were the same as any other restaurant abroad, unless you are out around Playa del Duque which was expensive (I never ate there). Hundreds of other restaurants to go to though!

FrownedUpon · 10/04/2022 14:17

Your mum’s right. There are much nicer places to visit on Gran Canaria!

dreamingofsun · 10/04/2022 14:17

tippledpink - That beach rings a bell. We were near a nature reserve where hippies lived. It was quite interesting watching them come into the resort each day and there were loads of hang gliders that swept over our heads and landed on the local beach.

TippledPink · 10/04/2022 16:01

Ah yes that was to the right of where I stayed, I remember seeing the gliders. If you went left from my hotel that was where the cheaper restaurants were.

Thanks Everyone. Will give stay away. My mum has been to maspalomas but really struggling to find somewhere within our price range which is a good decent all inclusive. Shall keeping looking. We would usually go to lanzarote before covid but there is hardly anything left there for the weeks we are looking to broadening out to the other islands. Will keep looking.
Thank you 😊

I'll definitely take a look at costa Adele in Tenerife 🙂

It’s a bit on the rough and ready side. Maspalomas is nicer. Or Playa Amadores.

Google Street view is good for showing you what the area around the hotel and beachfront area, main streets etc look like.

Have you looked in Playa Blanca Lanzarote? Lots of AI hotels and quieter and a more international crowd than the busier areas.

Or you might go self catering seeing as you're planning on eating out then you're not paying for catering and facilities that you won't make the most of.

We stayed here 2/3 years ago. Nice small villa complex, private pool, decent sized convenience store and bakery a couple of minutes walk away and not much further the Marina with restaurants, beach etc.
