looking at maybe having a few days in Amsterdam at start of May half term. Would like an air bnb. Need to stay in area that is easily accessible to centre. Any suggestions would be great please.

Some of the water locks have small buildings attached to them that you can stay in

I like to stay fairly central, so not loosing time travelling
Look at buying an "I am Amsterdam pass" it provides discount entries to attractions & museums & free public transport like tram & a boat ride

Some of my friends have stayed on Boatel

We stayed in a hotel on the Keizergracht Canal. It’s an excellent location. Decide where you want to visit and look at places within walking distance. We were not that close to the Van Gogh museum or the Rijksmuseum but Ann Frank House was close enough, the canals are wonderful and good restaurants everywhere. We liked Jordaan too. The Singel and the Herengracht are lovely canal areas too and if you choose a central section of canal to look for accommodation, you won’t be disappointed.

@cheesenpickle Give Hotel La Boheme a try. It's very reasonably priced. You get triple rooms and they serve a lovely, chilled breakfast. They also have a resident cat which may appeal to your 10 year old. Can highly recommend.

Friendly, safe, inexpensive, eco hotel, with a fab Italian restaurant next door/.

@cheesenpickle
Our hotel was redeveloped and is now expensive! But the area is excellent.

cheesenpickle · 11/04/2022 08:56

I've stayed at Rho hotel a few times because of good position. Not been for a few years so dk what reviews are like now. It's not fancy but included a buffet breakfast and easy to get about from there

PurpleHollyhocks · 11/04/2022 09:26

Try Leonardo royal - right by the museums. Not fancy but very central

Conscious hotel is also good

Public transport is quite expensive so staying in the centre is worth it

In terms if things to do - cycling round the vondelpark and stopping to eat is great. Anne frank but book in advance. Nemo museum if they are into science. Ton ton club if they are into gaming. Lots of instagrammable and cool places in Amsterdam which the tweens love

Have you tired secretescapes - they have Amsterdam hotels.

When I went I chose this. I had two early teens with me and wanted to avoid anything 'red light' 😂

Canal at one side, a small square a couple of minutes walk at the other. Really central, tram stop from the square. Walkable or tram from central station.
There was also a great bakery under one corner of the hotel 😉

The Jordaan area is very pretty. About 30 min walk from the main station, away from all the lairy areas, pretty canals, boutiques, good tram links. Air Bn B has really done a number on the city, driving up prices, causing huge housing problems, but the city is working hard to put in proper regulation. What about a hotel instead? This one is lovely mrjordaan.nl/

Rijks Museum and Anne Frank's house are both absolute musts.Van Gogh museum has been tiresomely packed on both occasions that I have visited but this might have improved since Covid. If you like art catch the train to The Hague for the Maritshuis museum. We I believe there are other museums worth visiting there.Otherwise explore the canals and stop for nice coffees and food.

FusciasBright21 · 11/04/2022 17:52

We stayed in the Westerpark area, it was a nice 20-30min walk into the centre. There's nice restaurants and cafes in the area and we walked past the Anne Frank museum on the way in. There were probably buses too but we had a baby in a buggy so walking was easiest for us Smile

FoodologistGirl · 18/04/2022 10:54

We stayed here an old asylum with beautiful architecture. Short tram ride outside to the centre but also adjoining a park with bike hire www.iamsterdam.com/en/amsterdam-qr/oost-watergraafsmeer/hotel-arena

Whydowedo · 19/04/2022 00:42

Bumping as looking for hotel recommendations too Smile

PiccoloMaud · 19/04/2022 03:25

Another vote for Jordaan area, absolutely beautiful

fuzzyduck1 · 19/04/2022 08:57

Anywhere on the tram network.
A day ticket is cheap as chips.
Try and stay central
Don’t stay at airport hotel to much hassle getting anywhere.
Botel is good but a pain to get to if your out late and miss the ferry that goes direct, although they will pick you up from the ferry at iamsterdam

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 19/04/2022 09:12

We stayed at Centerpacs Zandvoort.....much cheaper than UK - a 5 minute walk to the station and a 15 minute train ride into Amsterdam Central and 2 minutes to the beach which was a lovely one.
