Holidays
8-10 month old cruise or resort?
Bells3032 · 28/03/2022 11:17
We are looking to book a holiday with our by then 8-10 month old baby. My husband and I are not really beachy resort people - we both bore easily and both burn like nothing else so can't really sunbathe much. However, we recognise a city break may be a bit much for little one for 10 days.
We are experienced cruisers and were tempted.
Pros to cruising:
- access to food and dining etc that's flexible and always there
- when she's napping only one of us needs to stay with her and other can go and enjoy activities
- some ships have babysitting which I feel is a bit safer than babysitting in a resort
- different places and activities to keep us interested
- various activities like talks and bingo and quizzes that we like
Cruise downsides
- small rooms often with only shower so hard to wash baby
- most charge full price for babies so can be pricey
- not all have pools you can take babies in
- havr to go by their schedules
Resort
Good things
- bigger rooms with bath tubs so can have space for all her stuff
- able to provide baby stuff at the resorts we are looking at
- baby friendly pools and staff etc
- can go when we want so can maximise time away
Downsides
- if weather's terrible not much to do
- husband and I could get bored
- could get stuck in the room when she's napping.
Any advice?

Go to a kinder hotel in Austria. They will have lovely spa areas and food for adults, and babysitter or childcare available if you want. Also rental of most things needed. You can visit city either end or car hire and easily take some day trips to elsewhere ie into slovenia or Italy if you stay south

@Bells3032 I know its nothing to do with the ferry's its the poor standards on board compared to the other cruise lines. We have been on two different ships and both where grubby.

@funf oh thanks for letting us know that. I know they're not as good as some ships but thought they were OK. Have been on them before and they were OK but thst was about 20 years ago now

We just thought it was bad luck, the first time, but the second was worse, Cabin Flooded with sewage twice, staff not interested, no one enforcing hygiene like other lines, tried it twice never again.

@funf just looked at the reviews and they are appalling... What a shame. They're having issues enough with the ferry company, they need a good service to make up for it

If you like to be busy, have a look at Neilson activity holidays - the kids clubs are great and they have proper nannies from 4-24 months. And for adults there's inclusive sailing, windsurfing, cycling, tennis and various other things with free kit and tuition from beginner up. We did it when DS was 9 months and it was great (and much cheaper outside of school holidays of course!)
