Looking for a short holidays with two young children which can get to by train. Hotel , caravan or holiday park don't really mind, but nothing too expensive. I want something with lots to do for young children
Have been to butlins and quite liked it but would like to try somewhere new.

your starting point might be helpful, assuming you don't want to spend 8 hours on a train and make 3 connections!

The North West, I don't mind a few hours on the train

North Berwick - lovely seaside town on the East Coast Mainline. Rent a a little flat on AirBnB and walk to the beach every day.

@parietal North Berwick isn't on the east coast mainline, it's a branch line that ends at NB. Dunbar is on the main east coast line though.
Have a look at the map of trainlines which should help to give you some ideas.
North Wales should have plenty of options, Blackpool, southport, Lytham St-Annes, Scarborough, Windermere

Southerness near Dumfries.

You could look at the north east coast out of Newcastle - get the metro straight from central station and there's loads to do in the city if it doesn't turn out to be beach weather. The north east is one of the best areas to get around by public transport once you get there, so you can go to lots of places. Try Tynemouth or Seaburn for lovely beaches and places to stay/eat.

If you want to go south, Paignton has a station and there's holiday parks in walking distance, it's on the Plymouth line, long journey though.

Thanks for ideas. Something with everything onsite may be easier, like decent pool pool entertainment, bit like butlins. Is haven any good?

Haven, Hoseasons or Parkdean sites should all be ok. Check the reviews carefully though and if you can afford go for the larger or newer vans.
