Want to take her away because I teach and as i'm on maternity leave this is possibly the only year i'll be able to go outside of school hols, my dad thinks dd too young to go abroad and dh and i are at a loss to work out where to go and what to take, do pushchairs go on planes? Ours is huge! Ideas? I want sun and hate package resorts.

They should hold a fold up one for you but you have to be last off (I think) to get it back. Can you borrow a light one?
And check the security rules on liquids you can take on. Canary Islands? Sun, no extra jabs.. also recommend sun protective swimsuit to avoid sun cream nightmare.

You can normally take the pushchair to the gate and then it goes in the hold. YOu probably won't get it back til baggage reclaim the other end though though . at 6mo she'll probably have to sit on your lap though.

You can take enough liquids/food for your LO sufficient for the journey or be safer, make sure they're all in less than 100ml quantities (sealed, pref) - I've had a fair few flights this year so that measurement is jammed in my head!!! You can always opt to buy extra fluids/baby milk past security of course which is perfectly acceptable to go onto the plane. The airline you choose will specify the exact things you can carry for each country on their website.

Hungary is great in the late spring and early summer -- great weather, not too touristy, and the flight is only 2.5 - 3 hours IIRC. Taxi drivers are scary, though...

Slovenia is lovely but I forget how far it is to fly . People are really friendly and they speak fluent English as well (often useful!). It can get pretty hot though - not sure how 'hot' you like it!!

We did Thailand and Vietnam with an 8 month old!

Suggest you borrow or buy a lighter pushchair - they can get damaged on flights.

Greece is nice in May or June. Portugal is too. Or Italy.

Am in Hungary and while the weather is nice May and June it's not what I call a holiday destination really.

you can take pushchairs (even huge ones) and travel cots on top of your baggage allowance although i would like for somewhere that provides a cot where you are staying. there are also places that will provide you with pushchairs, highchairs etc.

here is an example

we took dd to spain when she was 3 mths old, we had a lovely time, very relaxed. we bought a lightweight stroller for going as easier for the plane and also more compact for sitting at table in cafes in the resort.
dd is now 18mths so know next time will be a lot less relaxing and a lot more hectic
Have a lovely time wherever you decide to go

My Mum took me to Majorca when I was 8 months old (in the 70's ) and had no probs.
Easier now than when they are walking!

purplemonkeydishwasher · 07/01/2008 09:32

if you are BF then planes are easy. you don't have to pack a thing.
we took DS to canada when he was 7mo. he nursed and played and slept the whole way. people who were sitting in front of us didn't even realize that we had a baby with us.

bookwormmum · 07/01/2008 19:15

I've travelled with loads of babies or toddlers around me and tbh, they were preferable to the 10-yr olds who amused themselves kicking my seat all the way back on one trip . My then dp started hyperventilating and going into a bit of a strop when I said that I was going to ask them to stop!! Ok for him - he wasn't sitting where I was.

BrownSuga · 07/01/2008 19:25

We took DS to crete in Sept at 3mths, then just been to paris at 6mths, and going to barcelona at 8mths. You just need to be a little more organised. You def. need the umbrella type strollers, you give them just before getting on plane, but come out on baggage carousel. We also took a sling, so we could pop him in that while handling luggage at other end etc...

I took a 500ml container of boiled water for the flight both ways, and didn't even have to taste it, as well as milk powder in dispenser.

Have taken mine to Mexico, Corfu and Spain a number of times from 2 months to 6 years of age. Did stay in a package resort in Mexico but not otherwise. She is not too young (of course she will not remember it) but she will have a lovely time, as will you - GO!!!

We jsut got back from Spain and took a double pushchair that folds in half so flat but big and no one batted an eye lid. You jsut leave the pushchair at the steps or entrance to the plane and you get it back at the carousel.
