UK weekends away - but not dog focused

Hi. We are trying to think of interesting places to have a weekend away.

We lost Ddog last month and previously everything had centred around him and nice walks - the Dales, Shropshire etc. It would be heartbreaking to go there without him so we are looking for interesting town or city breaks instead. We need to fill our time.

We are looking at Edinburgh and DS suggested Stratford on Avon.

Does anyone have any suggestions please??

Never had a dog and enjoyed cycling in North Norfolk, canoeing in the Wye Valley amongst other things.

Sorry for your loss @whiteroseredrose

York is lovely. Lots of nice boutiques/ galleries to explore, plus the cathedral etc
Chester is great if you like shopping, unusual Roman architecture etc. it still has the original city walls you can walk on plus a Roman amphitheatre and lots of cool ruins
I really fancy Edinburgh but haven’t been myself

Oh and Whitby is very pretty and a nice getaway. You could also visit nearby Bempton Cliffs RSPB reserve which is amazing and one of the few places you will see puffins in the U.K. they all nest on the cliffs. Bempton is a pretty cliff top walk where you may see the odd dog walker but imo better to see all the birds if you don’t have a dog with you. But if the sight of dogs will be too sad then Whitby on its own is still a fab weekend away

plenty to do in Stratford upon Avon, and also there is Warwick castle nearby, Cadbury world, Ancestor is a pretty little Roman town for lunch. leamington is a spa town for shopping and Kenilworth has a castle in ruins (always on the wrong side) and a Michelin star restaurant.

Greta restaurants in Stratford as well mind and the birth place to visit, the butterfly garden, then the houses surrounding Ann Hathaway's house etc

Thank you everyone. Some great ideas.

I used to go to York a lot with DF when I was a child. It would be nice to see it as an adult. I've never been to Jorvik or the minster.

I have never thought of Carlisle - I'll have a look...

Oxford is great for a weekend.

whiteroseredrose · 26/03/2022 21:53

Liverpool is fab - it is close by and we have been several times.

Can you go to London and do museums, eye, shard, tower etc? All the things you can’t do with a dog.

I know what you mean. My dog died in September and there are loads of places I still can’t go to as he’s not there with me.

Be prepared to still feel the loss dreadfully when you are doing these new things.

Mumdiva99 · 26/03/2022 21:58

Manchester- but might be a bit close to you. Or Brighton. Or Bath. Or Canterbury. Or Cambridge.....

whiteroseredrose · 26/03/2022 22:29

Actually Bempton cliffs is quite near to family but I've never been. That will be a definite. Thank you!

Yes Edinburgh! It’s gorgeous. 💕 So sorry about your dog ❤️

gardenhelpneeded · 27/03/2022 10:12

Ps if you’re near Liverpool you can get the train to Edinburgh. Only 3.5 hours. Stay centrally and you won’t need a car. Heaps to do. Central Edinburgh is not particularly dog friendly and the Botanical gardens don’t allow dogs. It’s a very walkable city.

whiteroseredrose · 27/03/2022 17:54

Thank you @gardenhelpneeded I think that is DH's first choice.

Bath
London
Salisbury/Stonehenge/Winchester

Anywhere you can go to NT type properties etc that you couldn't go inside with DDog.

emmathedilemma · 28/03/2022 09:21

Definitely Edinburgh and if you're willing to get on a plane Belfast is a really interesting city for a weekend.

Bells3032 · 28/03/2022 11:18

York, Bath or Edinburgh
