A challenge for you...help me find the right place to take my mum.

My mum has had a horrible year. Her husband had a stroke at Easter and is now bonkers in a home. Then last weekend she blacked out and fell backwards down the stairs, she woke up god knows how much later with a v bad head injury from landing on her flagstone kitchen floor and has only today come out of hospital.

I really think she needs a bit of a break, so I want to take her somewhere for a long weekend in January, just the two of us, to somewhere where she can really relax. Pref with some leisure facilities/massage, roaring fires, excellent food etc. Nothing stuffy or corporatey, pref within an hour or two's drive of Winchester.

Can anyone suggest the ideal place. Even a really good B&B type place, she is not bowled over by big hotels.

This looks nice in the New Forest RhineField House . For splashing out, there's always Chewton Glen.

Well it is looking like i may have to put this on hold as have just had a phone call to say that my stepfather looks like he is on the way out - he had jaundice and they have taken the decision not to treat as he has no quality of life at all. Oh god my poor mum All she needs on top of this.

So will come back to this thread at a more suitable time. Thanks to you all.

Thanks everyone. Have just spoken to the nursing home and they reckon he will be gone in the next couple of days TBH it's what he wants though, he hates living how he is.

Very sorry to hear your sad news. Your Mum is lucky that you care about her so much and are generous to her. Will you be able to go and spend a few days with your Mum, or have her to stay with you?

CountessDracula · 23/11/2004 11:28

Yes, I get compassionate leave (if I didn't I would just take unpaid) for a week I think. So I will go down when he dies and sort out the funeral etc, and just be around for her. She can come to us but as we both work it would prob be no good.

She is already coming here for xmas. We are very lucky in that my mum and dad get on really well, despite having been divorced for years. In fact they now live next door to each other - so my mum has lots of support from him and they have a lot of good friends in their village who are being marvellous. My dad and stepfather are best of friends too so I think it will hit my dad hard too.

It's all so awful for my mum, she is still so weak after her fall and week in hospital. I just hope she is in a fit state to cope. I have offered to go down whenever she wants me but of course I have dd and the dog in tow which will just create chaos when what she needs is calm.

Think I may have to leave them at home with dh and the nanny in fact.

Thanks to all of you for your kind thoughts xx
