Is Jamaica too far to go for a week?

Hi, please can you help me make a decision! We are considering going to Jamaica during Easter - haven't been on holiday for 2 years! So hence, the treat! We would land the same day - so we'd have literally have one week there? But there is a 5 hour time difference - my kids are 10, 14 and 17. What do you think? Too far for one week?

If not, we could do Canary Islands. Husband is a little weary of Egypt and we're not big fans of Dubai! Any other suggestions?

Hedonism II is the adult only hotel you want to avoid - it appears to have moved to Negril Beach - so maybe factor that in to your choice of beach

I always treat the flight out as part of the holiday too! Good book, or watch a couple of good films. Enjoy a drink (or three!) and generally just look forward to a lovely holiday.

The flight back isn't quite so easy, being overnight - if you can afford it, it is worth upgrading for the extra room/comfort. When we get home, generally we try to keep going till it's bedtime, but sometimes I'll take myself off for an hour or so's kip in the afternoon.

@QuizzicalEyebrows

And avoid the hotel which is sort of famous for being a full on orgy type of affair
Yes, Hedo II is best avoided by all Grin it's pretty far out thou. Negril is so beautiful. I am treating myself to a stay on the Cliffs now DC are older - can't wait!!

Negril is very beautiful. I did have to gently ask a woman who was happily relaxing at the waters edge to not be alarmed and get out slowly asap as there was a sting ray swimming beside her.

So that would stop me ever staying there again but it was September so there'd been a heavy downpour the night before which was a contributing factor

HelenWick · 15/03/2022 12:34

Stingrays are fine, just slowly brush your feet along the bottom and they move on - even if you get stung it's not so bad, just warm water compress for a few hours and it's not as painful as a bee sting according to my dad. My mum lives in Florida and the beaches near her have huge shoals of stingray but everyone swims. Steve Irwins incredibly bizarre and tragic accident gave them a bad press.

I used to visit Jamaica for a week during half term with my parents and I thought it was fine

BringMeTea · 16/03/2022 10:07

I have a rule that I won't fly more hours than nights I am staying. So 9 hours for a week I wouldn't do. But clearly many others would so...

BIWI · 16/03/2022 10:08

Why that rule though? It sounds pretty arbitrary!

BringMeTea · 16/03/2022 11:21

Works for me... Grin

It's more like an 8 hour flight (not 5 hours as pp has said).

True about early departure meaning you get there early afternoon local time.

If you can have a day or 2 off when you return I'd say go for it.

Been to some beautiful beach holidays which have been soulless but unlikely to be the case in Jamaica - good weather, food, music and vibe will be worth it.

I think Jamaica is too far for a week, and the Canary Islands is a better idea.
