Have they got snow up there? That would be lovely. Haven't been on it but seen it and know its lovely countryside! She'll love it.

Roisin · 19/11/2004 21:12

We've been - it's great! My boys are train mad, so we often go when visiting rellies up there. We found the staff all very welcoming and helpful to children. (Some of the other preserved railways are not run by child-friendly individuals!)

Do wrap up warm, as the old-style coaches tend to have unpredictable/no heating, and it's going to be very nippy tomorrow.

Have fun!

mrsmiawallace · 19/11/2004 21:14

dp said that about heating and i laughed so have to eat some humble pie now!
thanks for that.
no snow here at minute, but bitterly cold and ice on ground this morning.
gonna stop in goathland, has anyone any experience of that?

Goathland is whatever the place in Heartbeat is. Aidensfield?

I was there once in the summer and there were lots of sheep. And some small shops I think.

The North York Moors are lovely and the train journey is great

mrsmiawallace · 19/11/2004 21:19

well dd will love the sheep!
is the pub thats used on heartbeat a real pub? my mam thinks so but under a different name? is there anywhere for a bite to eat?

I remember the sheep, but not the shops! It's very picturesque, but there's not a great deal there - especially not in November. Do you have long at Goathland?

Some of the Harry Potter scenes were shot at Grosmont, and there's slightly more there, as it's a bit larger than Goathland.

Hmm... I'm worried now whether I've got these two the right way round. I once went to Guide Camp at Grosmont, only to discover that we were supposed to be at Goathland ... or vice versa!

mrsmiawallace · 19/11/2004 21:24

yeah think harry potter was shot at grosmont..oh no...dp just told me it was set at goathland!!!
flipping heck!
got about an hour of talking to sheep if no shops or cafe in goathland!

The Heartbeat pub is in Goathland. Its about quarter of a mile down the hill by the the station, next to the garage. Have asked DH - his memory much better than mine! At least in November there won't be too many tourists about - but it will be chilly. Lovely though. I'm a bit !

agy · 19/11/2004 21:30

Pub is at top of hill, you go down to the station!

mrsmiawallace · 19/11/2004 21:31

so if we get knackerd walking up to pub, we can all roll back down to station!
prob wont be open when we're there tho', were going between ten and eleven, thinking i should take some sarnies!

Grosmont is the end of the line definitely and is the bigger place.

Goathland is the smaller place - Heartbeat County. I would ask the conductor or someone if there will be a cafe open, or if there's a pub within easy distance of the station. If not, stay on til Grosmont.

mrsmiawallace · 19/11/2004 21:33

starting in grosmont, so might get there early for a wander around and pick up something to eat with sheep at goathland!!!!

mrsmiawallace · 19/11/2004 21:51

How was it?

mrsmiawallace · 20/11/2004 20:17

the train ride was lovely!
it was very cold, but crisp and white(frosty) with the sun streaming through!. like one of those feel good moments!
but when we got off at goathland, we were dissapointed as there was really nothing there, at least nothing open on a morning.
went into a tea room and spent a fortune on a sanwhich and toastie and dd constantly winged!
but over all, really enjoyed the journey!
will definatly do it again, and go straight through to pickering, probably in the summer.
such a pretty place though!
