Are people seriously paying this for a caravan?

Just looked at booking a cheap week away in August for the kids and they love caravan parks. Had a quick look at Haven in Wales or the lakes and they are 2k plus.
The cheapest one started at 1300? For a week!
I was expecting to pay up to a grand for one of the better caravans but 1300 for a basic one?? Looks like I had better dig out the tent for a UK holiday!
I cannot imagine them getting any bookings!
Who on earth pays this amount?

@anotherbrewplease

£2k for a week in the UK??Jesus! We've paid less than that for two weeks in Spain in June.. no way would I spend that amount to sit in a poxy caravan park (or a holiday cottage for that matter) with our unpredictable/miserable weather!

We had our best ever holiday on the Pembrokeshire coast in a large holiday cottage next to a river (took our 3 teenagers and 2 dogs). Went horse=riding. Had a day out on a boat and saw dolphins and seals. Weather was around 25 degrees c every day. Did some lovely coastal walks and a river walk every morning. Fantastic!! oh - and didn't get in a plane to contribute that bit extra to global warming.

It cost around £750 for the cottage rental, but we do book ahead.

Meh I've had lots of UK holidays throughout my childhood and they were all very sameish, these are all things we could do as day trips. And I definitely wouldn't want to be spending the sorts of prices they charge for UK accommodation knowing how expensive all the additional activities are in this country. Plus travel expenses etc.. not worth it IMO 🤷🏽‍♀️ I said the weather is unpredictable and I stand by it even if you had a good week of sunshine 😂

As for your little comment on my contribution to global warming, it's the first time I've flown anywhere in years so again meh, I do my bit being as eco friendly as possible in day to day life and I won't feel guilty about a rare holiday that my family has skimped and saved up for.

Wowzers that's ridiculous. 5 of us are flying to Portugal in August for 10 days self catering for less including car hire. And guaranteed sunshine 🌞

That is insane! We are paying 400 Euros for a static van on the beach in France for a week in August. No idea why anyone would go to Haven in Wales when you could do France Grin

I’ve pm you but I didn’t send my first message for ages so now you have two 😆

We used to take all the kids to a haven when they were smaller, it cost us £800 for a week in August 15 years ago. The prices are extortionate. £800 to spend the week in a chav infested dump, barely sleeping because the beds are so uncomfortable and those caravans are either boiling hot or freezing cold!! Im so glad we don't fo that anymore.

@RayofFunshine

Yeah - you're right of course.

Meh

BringMeTea · 09/03/2022 13:33

One cannot dispute the likelihood of sunny weather in the UK is very low. I would never pay those prices for a UK holiday.

Prices have gone insane since Covid. My DD lives in a fairly popular but not usually crazily busy holiday area but only has a small flat so can't accomodate us if we visit. We used to be able to stay in an AirBnB or similar for £50 a night or so, but I just looked into going for a couple of nights and the cheapest I could find was £300 for 2 nights, midweek. Add the cost of fuel to that and it's more than I can realistically afford. I know holiday operators have increasing costs too, and will have money to recoup from the early lockdowns, but I can't help think that some are taking advantage of the current situation now.

balalake · 09/03/2022 15:30

Presumably some people do otherwise prices would be reduced. I can understand a family where people do not like flying, or where they may want the ability to return home at no notice (be it for matters real or imagined), or to avoid possible testing for Covid.

A cottage may be cheaper. We stay in a cottage when visiting the in-laws who can’t cope with house guests anymore. In Pembrokeshire with 10 cottages on site, country park with big play area next door, pool and spa on site. £979 for week in August. It’s not on the coast but close to fabulous beaches. We have stayed in a similar set up near Glastonbury as well. Much nicer accommodation than a caravan.

If you want a cheaper holiday look at Parkdean in the lakes. Their prices for lodges come in cheaper than what you've quoted for a caravan.

goodnightgrumble · 09/03/2022 18:53

@Enzbear

Caravan parks have always been expensive, my dc are all grown up now but we stopped going on caravan holidays when we realized that you could book hotels in the UK with indoor pool, games room, breakfast etc for about the same price. And not that much more money to go abroad.
I have never been on a holiday in a hotel in the uk where kids have facilities. Can you recommend an example?

Looked at eurocamp and they are extortionate too!

I think holidays abroad are not that much cheaper when you calculate in the travel costs (petrol or parking storage for the car), if you are lucky enough to live near an airport or ferry then thats good

But I suppose if you live in Wales by the time you would get to France thats a long holiday with lots of petrol and travel costs.

I haven’t had a whole week in a caravan in the U.K. since my kids were primary age and I felt I could I longer take them outside of school holidays. I just can’t bring myself to pay over £1k and even up to £2k for a week in a caravan in the summer hols, when a few weeks later in September you could have the same caravan for £250.

We used to have the odd long weekend booked last minute at the beginning of the summer hols or the may half term, as you could find a last minute bargain, but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.

I looked at the prices of haven this year, then I booked Corfu for the same price in the summer hols. Much better value for money.
