Malaysia airlines to Australia?

Planning a trip to visit family in Brisbane in July. Has anyone flown with them? Last time we went we flew with Emirates but this time they are prohibitively expensive Sad. I don’t know whether to take a chance with Malaysia Airlines or stretch my budget a extra couple of hundred pounds and go with Qatar instead who seem to have a better reputation. I’m travelling with 9 yo DD if that makes any difference to whether you would recommend.

Any advice?

@MojoJojo71 I would choose the A380 or a 787 Dreamliner any day on a long flight, I sleep better and feel less jet lagged

The 777s are a bit hit and miss

I’ve been on Malaysia and Qatar albeit some time ago and no massive difference though given the choice would choose Malaysia Airlines by a whisker. It’s definitely pretty decent, not as good as Singapore (not tried Emirates). KL is a fun stopover for a day or two if you fancy. I wouldn’t want a stopover in Doha.

I’d love to explore Kuala Lumpur but Unfortunately @Frazzled2207 current Covid rules mean I’m not allowed out of KL airport. There’s 2 options at the moment, a 7 hour layover or an 18 hour one so I’m thinking of booking the longer one and hoping they change the rules by July and if not we can book into an airside hotel for the night.

Ooh a 7h layover sounds hideous
Def go for 18h and hope that the rules change

I find Malaysian hit and miss. Qatar any day!

Malaysian is nice but I would definitely shell out a couple of extra hundred for Qatar. It's worth it when you're traveling that far

I agree with @Frazzled2207 KL is a great stopover so I would definitely book the 18 hour stopover and hope for the rules to change!

Following with interest- we've just booked to fly Mal to NZ in December. Have only ever flown Singapore / Emirates to NZ before so not sure what to expect. Other options were significantly more expensive so we're just hoping for the best!

My issue is a 9 year old picky eater. Hoping there will be something fairly plain for him to eat on the menu...

Malaysian Airlines are great and the airport at Kuala Lumpa is fab too.
I've flown this route many times to NZ
