Specific hotel recommendations in the Austrian Tyrol (family-friendly)?

I'd like to go to Austria this summer. I have wasted too much time googling ideas for places to stay and wonder if anyone has some specific suggestions of hotels they would recommend. Thank you. (I feel mad posting about hols when the international situation is so frightening, btw. Please forgive my blinkers right now).

I'd like to be in Saalbach or somewhere else? Stubai valley? St Johann or Seefeld, or are those two big? Mayrhofen? (valley looks too big). I see places that are in package hols with Tui or Inn travel, for example, but not planning to book one of those as will do it independently with car hire etc...

Ideally, in a quiet, beautiful valley with lots to do (mainly walking, a swimming pool, other child-friendly activities..) We have one DD8. Maybe just for 5 days as we might get a train down to the Italian Tyrol and possibly even the coast / Croatia for some days too. I like an adventure Grin.

We stayed for two nights in the Dolomites in summer 2019 and loved it. Small, family run hotel in Selva with lovely simple food (half board) and I'd love something like this or perhaps a little bigger with a pool too. Not too luxury/pricey but nice enough.

Thank you in advance.

www.haymon.at/en/hotel-haymon.html We stayed here a couple of years ago. The food was lovely (we went half board) and staff all really friendly. In the town centre near the station. It doesn't have a pool but Seefeld has the Olympia Bad with indoor/outdoor pools and slides and smaller lake side one with cafe. The town is really pretty and you can do a horse drawn carriage ride. We went up the funicular / cable cars for the day. There was a big playground at the half way point. We got the bus to the Leutasch gorge. And the train to Mittenwald in Germany. 30 mins on the train to Innsbruck and children travel free on the regional trains as I recall.

PS - guests get a Seefeld card so the pool entry and local buses are free. There's also free cake in the afternoon.

www.ellmauhof.at/en/summerholidays/familyhotel-salzburger-land.html - here - Hinterglemm, beautiful - loads to do - guests get a Joker card which means you can access the gondola's and even take bikes up in them for a ride around. Or else www.adler-resort.at/ is lovely (bit less child orientated but still has a pool and great food).
You can go zip lining at the end of the valley

Thank you @MissAmbrosia and @bestbefore, both those ideas sound great. It looks like Seefeld and Salbach Hinterglemm would both be really good places to go. Thank you for the recommendations.

We went to zell am see in 2019 and it was perfect, a really lovely town by the lake, loads to do in the town and nearby and best thing was a free pass on lots gondolas and entrance fees eg to the krimml falls and this glacier at 3000m. We stayed at the Hotel Stadt Wien, very family friendly with trampoline, swings, big outdoor pool and loads of animals to pet.

I love this place.

We've stayed at the Hotel Charlotte in Seefeld and would recommend - they have apartments suitable for families, a pool and wellness area, and pet llamas in the grounds! Seefeld is a good base for a summer holiday as other posters have mentioned - Innsbruck, the Italian Tyrol etc are all easily drivable.

Have a look at

www.kinderhotels.com/?gclid=CjwKCAiApfeQBhAUEiwA7K_UHzLW5TXHde9Raat_LuB5whSKrrCVmL_1vCCJf3oZ4PHL6gQGrI1VCBoC_cIQAvD_BwE

They have some lovely hotels. We loved the Kinderhotel Buchau - went back twice and its all inclusive as well with some lovely cocktails and activities for the children. A lake and free bicycles etc. Best place we have visited in Austria by far

zzzz31 · 07/03/2022 11:30

Thank you so much for the further recommendations. I've been away from the thread until today - thank you! I will have a look at them all.

But am I missing something, or are those Kinder hotels incredibly expensive, @Quartz2208 and @Silkierabbit? The Buchau one is coming up at over £600 per night! Perhaps they only have suites left or something for the days I checked, but it is a similar price on booking.com and on their own website. I suppose it is all-inclusive, but is that the price you have to pay?

The Hintertux one is more reasonable at £285, but limited availability...

@loopsngeorge I hope you don't mind me asking, but did you go with a package to that hotel in Zell Am See? Looks very nice.

It wasnt when we went @zzzz31 in 2016 and 2017

When are you going - a week on booking.com in August was £6000! But a deluxe apartment.

When I did the site for a week it was cheaper outside of peak but still expensive so clearly gone up

We also stayed at the Hotel Saalbacher hof in Saalbach and that has a week in August for 268 Euros a night so 1918 for a week in August and that was very nice as well

zzzz31 · 07/03/2022 12:13

Thank you, @Quartz2208. Yes, I'm looking at the school summer holidays (August) so I can understand if it is pricey. I'll check out your Saalbach recommendation too. £268 is more in line with our budget!

Quartz2208 · 07/03/2022 12:22

I suspect prices have gone up as well in 5 years! We definitely didnt pay that much

Saalbacher hof was very nice - I really liked Saalbach and the card that you had around the place (and it was one of the things that you said)

zzzz31 · 07/03/2022 15:12

Thanks, @Quartz2208. I have read that Saalbach is better as a winter destination, and that other areas are more picturesque. Did you think that? Certainly the lake at Achensee looks beautiful and Zell am see too - but I guess I could visit Zell from Saalbach.

I have found another hotel in Achensee that is a bit cheaper than the Kinder one, though still quite pricey but might splash out... considering trying a couple of different places...

Not quite the same location but we stayed near Fussen in Germany close to the Austrian border with children (years ago now) and they loved it, right by the castles but there's hill walking, mountain biking, summerbob (bobsleigh on wheels). Lots of the hotels have family rooms and packages. I've only done Austria since they were young adults so stayed in a normal hotel

Quartz2208 · 07/03/2022 15:48

We went through a stage of going to various parts of Austria and while Zell am See is definitely more beautiful - Saalbach is definitely more child friendly with lots to do (you should get the Joker Card included) and at the end of the valley is the hanging bridge and treetops bit. Lots of activities to do and walks that are for children.

It is perhaps not that quiet though definitely has a buzz to it along the main promenade in the evening

loopsngeorge · 07/03/2022 21:16

Oh yes Fussen is amazing as well and has a really good skatepark and kids park I seem to remember. Germany was quite a bit cheaper than Austria as well. I think back in 2019 we paid the hotel direct about 2800 euros for 2 adults 2 kids for the week, that was for a really nice room, breakfast and dinner with drinks but at the breakfast buffet you could make yourself up a packed lunch. The kids got fed up with that after a couple of days but it was a good way of avoiding paying for lunch which was £££ everywhere.

zzzz31 · 08/03/2022 12:01

Thanks @gogohm and @loopsngeorge for the Fussen recommendation. Sounds good!

@Quartz2208 definitely can see the appeal of Saalbach over Zell. That really helps! Thank you so much. It is hard choosing when you have never visited any of these places!
