Looking to hire a house in the summer that sleeps about 14 people. Not sure which are the nicest bits.
TIA

Try Trip advisor for unbiased advice.
I also found that 'The Rough Guide' was a really good book for anywhere in South Africa. It goes town by town down the coast, and really digs up the dirt on whether the beach is safe or if there is a chemical plant only two miles down the road.

Sandwich is beautiful - would avoid Hyannis - although the boat to Nantucket goes from there it isnt a particularly nice area.

binklebells · 02/01/2008 19:56

Oh and the whale watching tour goes from Barnstable which is also lovely - am very jealous - went to Cape Cod last year - love the place!!

We were in Cape Cod last summer. We were in Falmouth (upper Cape, ie closest the mainland), and there are plenty of lovely vacation rentals in that area that would meet your needs.

Our family has a reunion there every summer, and we made it there for the first time in a few years. The immediate family stays in a resort each year (Green Harbor in East Falmouth), but extended family members tend to rent houses in the East, West and North Falmouth areas. What brings us together is Old Silver Beach in West Falmouth. It is a fab beach for young children - lots of surf, but totally safe (there is only about 3ft of water as far as you can see).

Cape Cod is an odd place. We wouldn't go except for it being the location of our family reunions. It is too expensive to be able to recruit service workers, so restaurant service is very irritating. Apart from Gordon Brown going on his honeymoon there, it is not really an international resort.

As for Hyannis, I don't know what is the fuss. It is basically a single high street, with not very interesting shops or restuarants. We don't even bother going there anymore. A nice place close to Hyannis is Mashpee. Barnstaple, north mid cape, is fairly nice - lots of tourist activities as it's where the whale watching tours leave from.

Well we only thought about going there as a load of us are going to a wedding in West Virginia and fancied staying over for a couple of weeks for a summer holiday

We figured it would be less sweltering up there

New England is a great place for the summer because it is cooler - Cape Cod has always been a bit like here when we've been there, from extremely iffy to pleasantly hot.

If you have a lot of kids in your party, you may want to consider a resort where they go to 'camp' (ie supervised children's clubs). After our stay in Cape Cod last summer, we drove up to Vermont and stayed in a fab resort. There were lots of multi family groups there. www.smuggs.com

We went to Cape Cod last year (me, DH, DD (3 yrs), DS (1 yr) and we had a fantastic holiday. We stayed in Chatham which was highly recommended by american friends of ours. We went in August and it was around 26 degrees, very pleasant for us as we live further south in the states and are used to more like 36 degrees in the summer! Beaches are very clean, nice food, very relaxing, would highly recommend. Try www.capecodrental.com/index.shtml
for information. If you want any more info, websites etc I'd be happy to help...
Not sure how old your kids are but the whole of the Cod is a very child friendly place.
It is only 1 1/2 hours to Boston too so we had a few great days there too.

haggisaggis · 03/01/2008 15:57

We have stayed in Falmouth for 2 weeks each summer for 3 years now. We rent the same house which is really close to the beach - adn also rent bikes etc.
We like it as it has a good mixture of beaches, restaurants etc. and you can get the passenger ferry to Martha's Vineyard for daytrips. It's only about 1.5 hours drive from Boston - so easy to get to. However, for "real" cape somewhere further down the cape may be nicer. Look here for ideas on accomodation.

CountessDracula · 03/01/2008 16:35

Martha's Vineyard/Nantucket would be fine too

Thanks that site is great!

Most of Cape Cod is pleasant, with the notable exception of Hyannis.

The Atlantic side is: more popular, busier and has colder water.

The other side of Cape Cod: quieter, has the advantage of warmer water.

Earlybird · 03/01/2008 16:55

Have a vague recollection that Minty knows about this area. Perhaps worth checking with her for suggestions...

Twizzy · 08/01/2008 01:39

Wellfleet is nice for clamming and it has a great calm bay for children. The inner side of the Cape is calmer for kids for swimming etc and the Atlantic side is obviously rougher. Wherever you stay on the Cape nowhere is particularly far from anywhere else........but it might take you forever to get there because the traffic is awful.

We love Provincetown, very ecclectic and fun. You can whalewatch from here too and because you are already further out to sea than Barnstable, you actually spend more time watching the whales than travelling to get to them. Oh and the ferry to Boston goes from Provincetown too.

We rent normally through VRBO.com which is an independent site for owners to rent their homes etc. We have always had success to date. If you are looking for the summer, you need to be quick it is really busy in the summer and many places are booked well in advance.

Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket are expensive and also FULL of people. YOu would probably find sticking to the Cape itself preferable. There are also seal watching trips too that run from the southern part of the Cape.

HTH a bit, if you need any more help let me know, we live in New England!

OverRated · 08/01/2008 03:46

Provincetown. Lovely.

CountessDracula · 26/03/2008 16:04

am so in two minds as to whether to go to Cape Cod or to come home and go to france

Our dilemma is that everyone else is being a pita and cna't make up their minds where they will be
so
I am nowlooking for somewhere fro me and dh and dd (5 nearly 6 by then)

Somewhere nice with shared pool near beach
like this

I am worried they might be Butlins USA thoguh

Can anyone recommend somewhere small and nice that would not be too vile and kids clubby, we don't need childcare at all but would be nice for dd to have other kids to play with
