Have you visited Scarborough before OP? We went for the day last summer and it was very different to how I expected it to be.

Not for 30 years

We went to Whitby with a day trip to Scarborough. the kinds loved it

Soihaveagoat · 20/02/2022 12:09

@philandbill what do you mean? What did you expect it to be? I've been going to Scarborough for the last 40 years and I love it. Much prefer it over Whitby.

Op I can recommend an airbnb but depends how many are going? We usually stay at the Premier Inn as a family but stayed at this nice airbnb with friends last year.

We go to Scarborough a lot as it’s really close to home, you have to fully accept it for what it is... Cheesy seaside fun and vicious seagulls! Lovely park and nice Sandy beach though.

I wouldn’t recommend any of the hotels, I have stayed in a few after concerts at the open air theatre and they are all very run down and shabby.

You can rent one of the newish apartments on the north bay but they are extremely pricey IMO.

I would recommend Thornwick bay holiday park if you don’t mind a caravan, it’s Flamborough so not quite Scarborough, it’s a haven site with sea views, it’s a bit smaller and much quieter than the usual loud in your face holiday parks. All recently newly refurbished too.

I'm also curious as to what you mean by that.

Scarborough seems to me like any typical seaside town. Beach, walks, ice cream, fish and chips, amusements, crowded on nice days, but if you go early or out of season, fairly quiet. Also a good base for other places in the area like Whitby. The castle is interesting and probably worth getting English Heritage membership if you're a family. Nice little indoor water park.

I've never stayed there as it's day trip territory for me, but I'd look at this new quirky hotel or The Sands.

Not sure about lodges and cottages, it's mainly hotels and holiday flats, but you do see cards in windows in the back streets of the old town (up steep hills!) so that might be an option.

Philandbill · 20/02/2022 12:52

I thought that it would be smaller and quieter. I should have researched it better.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/02/2022 12:59

I don't understand how anyone could go anywhere for a holiday or even a day trip these days without doing some research. Even a couple of minutes on Google maps will give you a good impression of the scale of the place and type of amenities/attractions.

Philandbill · 20/02/2022 13:47

As I said, I should have researched it better. Glad we were only there for a few hours.

We have stayed at The Sands apartments.
Right on the beach on the North bay. Fabulous.
Staying here for a few days this year

I've been visiting Scarborough all my life (60 years). It was very down trodden a few years ago but has had a boost from covid and people taking UK holidays.

It's a good family holiday resort, lots to do with children.
If I want a fab beach just for adults I prefer Filey.
I dislike Whitby which is hyped as much better than it really is. Dreary town and dreary beach.

bettertocryinamercedes · 20/02/2022 15:42

Scarborough isn't very nice.... Filey is tho! Base yourself maybe a wee bit further along the coast would be my advice!

BirdOnTheWire · 20/02/2022 16:04

One unusual thing about Filey is that the sea front is lined with lovely self catering accommodation, all across the road from the beach. Look at 5 Leys accommodation, I've stayed in a few of theirs.

I liked the food options in Whitby
