Indre By is Copenhagen’s old town and the city centre. If you want to be in central Copenhagen, with easy access to tourist attractions as well as central station (the public transportation hub) you should stay in Indre By.
Norrebro is just next to Indre By, only a few minutes walk to the city centre and there are lots of budget options. There are also plenty of trendy bars, boutiques and restaurants.
Vesterbro (just behind Tivoli Gardens) has quite a hipster vibe. There are loads of new bars and restaurants, trendy hotels, art galleries, organic markets and vintage shops. If you don’t mind a little noise, the atmosphere is electric. There are some good budget options and it’s handy if you want to stay late at Tivoli (definitely recommended).

Copenhagen card is definitely worth it if you're planning to see a few sights, also includes the canal cruise.
Definitely go to Tivoli but don’t go too early in the day. Try and stay as late into the evening as possible, which is when the park is at its best. It’s got a fantastic selection of restaurants for every budget and taste.
The Blue Planet is a quick hop on metro from the centre. It’s a stunning aquarium and is huge, with enormous walk-through tanks. There’s a muggy rainforest section too.
Definitely go on a canal boat tour, and get one which goes to the Little Mermaid statue.
Wander through Christiania. If you’re going on your own, go early in the morning. Because of the drug activity here it’s a good idea to be aware of the various “do’s and don’ts” before entering.
Factor in plenty of time to visit Torvehallerne Market. It’s busy at lunchtime, but that’s because it has some amazing little places to eat. Lots of it is under glass, so still alright if it rains. It’s a good place for souvenirs and for buying picnics. If the weather’s nice, Id recommend buying lunch there and taking it to the nearby Botanical Garden which is beautiful. It’s also free.
The Carlsberg Brewery has a fun tour, interactive exhibits and horse drawn carriage rides but the best part is that admission comes with complimentary beer! I tried a raspberry beer which was delicious. It’s free with the Copenhagen Card.
I’d also recommend going to the Coffee Lab.

Thank you so so much Five for your amazing help. I’ve got the travel guides etc but nothing helps more than such great personal recommendations. Going in June to se Eric Clapton with 3 more days to explore.

We were in Copenhagen for 2 days and managed a canal boat trip, bike ride around the City, and a walking tour around Christiania, which included being corralled by the Police in a drugs raid!
Also visited the Lego shop - of course. didn't go to the Tivoli - but good reports

Great city - would love to go back

A couple of cultural suggestions:

  • if you like art museums, the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is very nice;
  • if you fancy a day trip out of Copenhagen you can very easily visit the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde by train;
  • alternatively, you could take the train north to the Louisiana Museum in Humlebaek. On the way back you can stop off in Rungsted Kyst and visit Karen Blixen's home, where she wrote several of her books and where she is buried. Both require a little bit of walking, but you can do both easily in one day;
  • and don't forget to go to Nyhavn and visit one of the fish restaurants - delicious;
  • and shop! Copenhagen has loads of lovely shops selling clothes and homewares - much of it beautifully designed and displayed - I love shopping there.

You can cross the Oresund Bridge into Malmo in Sweden for the day. There isn't that much to recommend in Malmo, mind you. The bridge is the best part of it

LemonViolet · 19/02/2022 16:10

Second much of @Fivemoreminutes1 post especially Tivoli late (spent 2 happy evenings there) and Blue Planet. We enjoyed the zoo as well if you like that kind of thing.

We also did a day trip out of the city on the train to visit an open air heritage museum that has all of the old buildings from all over the country rebuilt there so you can see what they were like. Can’t remember the name sorry but I’m sure you can look it, it was a nice trip out on the train and nice to be out in the countryside and I love all the old buildings.

I’ve just come across this as we’re booked to go to Copenhagen over Easter - arrive Thursday, leave Easter Monday. However, I’ve since had a mini-panic, as all of those days, apart from the Saturday appear to be public holidays. Is anything going to be open?!
And if we were going to take a day trip out of Copenhagen on Easter Sunday, will the trains etc be running? And if so, can anyone please recommend a good costal place / town etc to go to? Thanks!

Floralnomad · 19/02/2022 21:17

I wouldn’t bother with The little Mermaid , it’s very underwhelming , agree about Tivoli gardens though , when we visited it was winter and really pretty .

YorkshireIndie · 19/02/2022 21:22

Definitely recommend the Copenhagen card. We arrived late and decided to not activate it until the next day and it meant that we could squeeze in a trip to the zoo whilst we were killing time before our flight

MissAmbrosia · 19/02/2022 21:44

Watching for tips. I saw a programme about the Tivoli hotel and have it bookmarked in my mind for dh's 65 this summer. It's not cheap mind.

SpecialBreak · 28/02/2022 18:17

Tivoli Gardens is an absolute must! The Science Museum was another favourite. I loved eating in Nyhavn (outdoor seating was heated). Underwhelmed by the Little Mermaid. We have stayed in both Vesterbro and Nyhavn, and preferred Vesterbro. Beautiful delicious bakeries for morning pastries! Shopping in Copenhagen is also fabulous. Also agree with the Roskilde Viking museum. Went to 2 in Denmark and that was the best one

Rainydays200 · 02/03/2022 17:16

Tivoli is a must-do. A with kids we loved the science museum. It’s very hands on, so much for the kids to get involved with, we spent a whole morning there

Flights and accommodation booked👏
Thanks again for the help.

Any restaurant recommendations please? Breakfast lunch or dinner…

Copenhagen is amazing! We were there for a week last year.

This restaurant was amazing https://en.marvogben.dk, and we enjoyed this Korean place so much we went twice http://ssam.dk.

We also had very expensive but fantastic Smørrebrød at https://aamanns.dk/restaurants/aamanns-1921/ because DP accidentally booked the restaurant instead of the Aamanns deli Blush

We ate a lot of pølse too, to balance out the expense.

Starlightstarbright1 · 03/04/2022 16:57

Following..i remember Tivoli as a child. Was planning to take my ds a few years ago in Autumn but covid hit.

konasana · 03/04/2022 16:58

Mike Bike bike tours were great when I went in 2016!

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 03/04/2022 16:59

If youre in Vesterbro I recommend the south indian. Its best to book though as it is right around the corner from the new theatre so tends to fill up with theatre goers.

Bring a sleeping mask. Youd be amazed how many hotels, b&bs etc dont have blackout blinds and june is midsummer. Ooh if youre here on june 23 therell be witch burning.

cptartapp · 03/04/2022 17:04

Loved Copenhagen. We went at New Year, the craziest scariest NYE ever.
Tivoli at night was amazing, check the opening times though. It was closed some of the days we were though although may be different in summer.
Carlsberg brewer was also shut for some sort of renovation.
Copenhagen Card definitely worth it.
Canal cruise was good, although could only see the rear of the Little Mermaid and even the front was disappointing. She's tiny!
Not cheap, but a beautiful city.

ImInStealthMode · 03/04/2022 17:06

Oh and ps.. echo the advice for Copenhagen Card and Tivoli!

We also enjoyed the Zoo, the Botanic Garden, Nyhavn and going up the round tower on one of the nights the observatory is open to the public (although it was too cloudy to stargaze). The Dinosaur Exhibition at the Natural History Museum is small at the moment, I believe the rest of it is being refurbished/rebuilt but worth it if you're passing and have a Copenhagen card.

Friends had told us good things about Freetown Christiana but both DP and I were very underwhelmed and to be honest a bit uncomfortable there. It wasn't somewhere we felt like stopping for a beer.

Soffit · 03/04/2022 17:09

Copenhagen's just okay. I think it is a bit overrated tbh. We stayed right beside Tivoli. There is a Wagamama there - double sized portions at double the price so worth ordering one between two and sharing. There is Lego everywhere and a flagship Lego shop on the main thoroughfare which took the pressure off me entertaining for hours every day! You can do the later session at Tivoli and roast-your-own smores in the firepits.
Zayida's is a good Indian place in a little foodie market within walking distance of Tivoli. There is also Noma but we passed on it as we don't eat insects.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 04/04/2022 05:53

Lots of excellent recommendations and tips - thank you all very much.
I wouldn’t have thought about the sleep masks Strictly Will miss the witch burning by a week!

@MissAmbrosia which programme did you watch? I saw one with Jane McDonald but can't work out which hotel it was.

Georgiemc · 29/05/2022 18:21

I would recommend Coffee Collective, Baest, Warpigs & Reffen food market
