What's good to do in Dublin?

Dublin got a few nominations in this thread recently - Most overrated destination you’ve visited? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/4465340-Most-overrated-destination-you-ve-visited

But I'm already going there for work in November and am considering adding in a couple of days to look around.

I'm travelling alone, like culture, history, nature, food. Don't drink, not interested in pubs/nightlife.

Dubliners - come tell me what's great about your fair city!

Fish and chips at Leo Burdock’s. The shop itself can only hold about 3 people so take them down to St. Patrick’s Cathedral nearby. Ask for the ‘crispy bits’ with your chips… you can thank me later!
Buy some soap in Sweny’s Pharmacy
There’s a big herd of wild deer which can be found roaming through Phoenix Park (and crossing the road when you least expect it!).
Marsh’s Library is well worth a visit. You can get guided tours and it’s really something you have to see to believe.

The museum is amazing. Don't miss that.

Epic and Jeanie Johnston
Dublin Castle and Chester Beatty library

MoLI
Christchurch and St Patricks Cathedrals
Stroll around South city - Stephen's Green, Merrion Square. For food: George's St/Camden St/Wexford St
Dart train to seaside villages - Malahide, Howth.

I'm taking a day off work on my birthday to go to ''Epic''
It won a prize for being best european tourist exhibition so hopefully it's not completely shit!

Afterwards, I may go to the Stella Cinema in Rathmines. Depending on what's on, although, I'd watch teletiubbies there it's so lovely. It's an old art deco preserv ed (or restored?) cinema, seats quite far apart, little side table for your wine. I went there on my own to watch house of gucci and I loved it. So comfy. You can order food and wine to have at your side table while you watch the film. They show current films but not typical block busters. think they're showing cyrano now.

obviously who knows what's on in November!

the little museum of Irleand on st stephen's green

This is a small museum, i remember photographs of women going up to northern ireland to get condoms. I think I did that one in under an hour. It was more photos and items and people.

UserBotLurking9to5 · 19/02/2022 10:54

PS, love the food in avoca cafes and there's one in suffolk street.

Soffit · 19/02/2022 10:55

Book Of Kells - obviously!
You can get to Wicklow/Avoca for the day if you want to escape
Rolling Donuts along the Liffey (sp)

Dublin isn't always appreciated on here but I love it!

Puppalicious · 19/02/2022 10:57

Agree with Kilmainham Gaol and possibly the Book of Kells in Trinity for history (although the latter may get over crowded), also EPIC. And maybe the Chester Beatty. Actually CherylStreep’s list is good - do that! Howth combines a great hill walk with lovely sea views with a load of good sea food restaurants. I think Ireland does seafood well, also steak!

UserBotLurking9to5 · 19/02/2022 11:06

I'm a real philistine and I love the shop at Trinity College and at The National Gallery. I bought that tea towel of two lovers in the turret recently as a valentines present to meeeeself :-p Enjoy drying up darling from me to me.

Puppalicious · 19/02/2022 11:13

If you’re coming in early November when there are still autumn leaves, I would try to get a tour out to Glendalough. It’s absolutely stunning on a fine Autumn day, has history too.

EngAng · 19/02/2022 11:22

Only a tourist, but the best thing was St Michan's Church and the crypt with mummies. Bewley's for coffee and cake (rather faded round the edges, but still a good experience).

YellowLemonshade · 19/02/2022 12:04

Thanks everyone, I'm feeling inspired - shall make a list!

We started visiting the Winding Stair bookshop which is a destination in its own right.

https://winding-stair-bookshop.myshopify.com

The notice board was crammed full of ads for other interesting events across Dublin, mostly spoken word, all very entertaining and not found anywhere else.

Also enjoyed a city tour, as I recall it only took an hour or so, but was great for orientation and to tell you all the alternative names of the sights: the Flossie in the jacuzzi and the dead zoo

Enjoy. I love Dublin. We stayed in St Stephen Square. I love how the railings mostly missing on London houses are still in place in Dublin.

SpikeySmooth · 19/02/2022 12:34

We took a train to the seaside which was lovely
Molly malone statue.
St Stephen's Green.
Shopping in Brown Thomas (remortgage your house)
Guinness Storehouse
Gallagher's Boxty House in Temple Bar.

Shakirasma · 19/02/2022 12:43

We did a fantastic walking tour. We used one who doesn't have a fee, you tip your guide at the end with whatever you feel it was worth so they always to a great job.
It was absolutely fascinating, I learned so much about the city and its sights, and more about the history of Ireland in that 2 hours than I had in my previous 43 years on earth.

UserBotLurking9to5 · 21/02/2022 21:38

Can you link to the walking tour you enjoyed? @shakirasma

Going on walking tours combines about three things that bring contentment in to yr life. (gretchen rubin, catherine gray) 1) walking, 2) meeting people, and 3) either history/culture or nature. So I decided a while ago i was going to do one, but ive diihered. There are loads. A recommendation would be good.

Thank you! I need to introduce something scientifically proven to bring contentment into my routine. Work home work home work home!!!
