Maldives help/advice - for my F*** Off Cancer Holiday.

This is what dd1 has called it 😊 Diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of months into the first lockdown. Finished all treatments (🤞) and had my last reconstruction op and after some dark times without feeling I could look forward and I now feel ready to do that. We didn’t properly celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary or my 50th so we want something really special.

Other than occasional weekends we haven’t been away with just the two of us since pre dc and never long haul or exotic/luxury.

I’m a bit covid wary in terms of worrying that measures might take some of the relaxed vibe away or catching it out there (more an issue for DH work wise than me tbf) but I’m so desperate for a proper get away from it all.

We usually love exploring the history and culture of places we visit and usually like alternating days of sightseeing and wandering or doing things with beach/pool days, but the Maldives is a bucket list place for me. I did worry we might miss that but with a more ‘sightsee-y ‘place I would probably risk tiring myself out, plus DH works long hours with a lot of work stress, and obviously a horrible last 2 years for him too with my health worries so I think being ‘forced’ to properly relax and rest will be a really good thing for us both.

We would like to go in the next month if we can find availability, looking at two weeks. I’ve read the north atolls will be better weather wise at this time? Maybe two islands with different vibes with a seaplane transfer?

Swimming and snorkelling will be manageable (realistically I won’t be up to much else), so I’d love somewhere with the best opportunities for seeing amazing marine life and we don’t mind a longer transfer if necessary.

We’d like the opportunity to be social in the evenings at least some of the time, so not too much of a keep to yourselves vibe for the whole trip.

It’s a special trip and probably once in a lifetime so we’re prepared to splurge but we don’t really want or need the absolute pinnacle of luxury. I think it’ll be fabulous enough just being there, but maybe some lovely or special touches that we wouldn’t necessarily pay a fortune for, and we both think we’d actually prefer a beach room rather than over water.

Just to add, we enjoy a drink but aren’t big drinkers so would appreciate advice of whether AI might be the best value still? I don’t think we’d choose AI elsewhere, as ordinarily we’d explore/eat out of a hotel complex but I imagine it’s probably a logical option there?

I’ve been having a good look but I’m overwhelmed with all the different island options so some suggestions/recommendations based on your own experiences would be very welcome. TIA. 😊

Can I be really boring and mention travel insurance?

Sorry…. but it’s really important. Have a fabulous holiday.

Still looking 😊 @minipie The Helengeli hotel’s own website was down for a few days so I emailed them and had a reply a couple of days ago saying they had no availability. I have now checked again and they do show availability but a couple of agents did tell me when availability is limited this hotel books ‘on request’, it can show availability on their website but when you go to book/ask directly there is none. Odd..so having waded through seemingly endless research and reviews, I know there are so many lovely islands and resorts, but this one really ticks all our boxes, and as much I was desperate to go asap and have an amazing ‘dream’ holiday, and I’m sure other islands would provide that, the reality of the cost means we would probably never go again and it makes my sensible head want to make it as perfect as possible, so I think we’ll wait and book specifically there another time.

@bert3400 I hope you have a wonderful time. I briefly looked at Zanzibar, DH really doesn’t mind at all where we go so I will look again. We also really like the look of Mauritius, though that seems best Oct/Nov. We do ordinarily prefer somewhere with more things to do and see away from a resort/beach and I do have a little niggle that as stunningly beautiful as the Maldives is after a few days we would start to wish we had a bit more variation.

Thank you @MiniCooperLover

That is very annoying! I am currently wading through Maldives resort websites finding out prices and availability so if it’s not actually correct…. gaaah.

In terms of getting bored: it really depends on whether you love snorkelling/diving. If you’re not keen on either then I do think it might be boring after a while, although resorts are increasingly putting on activities like tennis coaching, cookery or ecology classes… but it’s not the same as exploring. I think 2 weeks is quite a long trip, we have generally gone for 9/10 nights (one of which is on the flight).

Maybe a two centre holiday - eg Sri Lanka plus Maldives could work well geographically/flight wise?

TreasuredMim, genuine question - how do you haggle with Kuoni? I want to go on a family trip there next year for my 50th. It'll be me, DH and DS (who will be 11 but still loves a beach and a pool).

As I recall when I rang Kuoni I was quoted a price and I ummed and arred and said that was too much for me. So they offered a cheaper price and I continued to be unimpressed and they upgraded the rooms.

I’ve booked the Lux south ari atoll for my honeymoon next year. I’ve just seen that PCRs are no longer required for the Maldives

Another vote for Kuramathi!! We have taken our children twice and it’s excellent!

If you're still looking, contact any of these travel agents. Purely Maldives, Magic of Maldives and simply Maldives. All able to give better rates than the likes of Kuoni.

Baros is beautiful, adults only nice reef for snorkelling, low key so quiet no mad evening entertainment if that's not your thing.

Also speedboat transfer so you'll have less waiting around and more time at your resort.
