Babies sleeping abroad

Random question. For those who've been abroad to a hotel with a baby (1 year) would you always use travel cot provided and just hope it's clean?! Or do you have anything you can recommend for safe sleeping?

Thanks

Coslept with DD.

I take my own travel cot. I prefer to know it’s clean, the bedding fits . And it’s something he’s used to

We use babyjorn travel cot

@Caspianberg in terms of taking it, how do you travel with it? Does it fit in a case or have to check it alone as a seperate piece?

I just used the travel cot provided by the hotel. Never gave it a second thought.

I've always just used the provided travel cots, as it's something else to lug around. Airlines will often let you check one in as part of your luggage allowance, similar to a buggy, but check because they often have limits.

Caspianberg · 20/02/2022 19:27

@Owlette123 - it’s a separate piece of luggage. Most airlines allow 2 pieces of baby items for free. I usually take travel cot and car seat as baby item, then small travel pushchair goes as hand luggage

Depends on age of 1 year old though. Mine is 1, but nearer 2 years and can now climb out. So falls asleep in main bed and I transfer into travel cot.

Thanks all

Those who have travelled - did you take car seats, ie if you know you'll just need for the transfers (1 hour) or did you just keep baby on lap?

It depends. For hotels or self-catering cottages we normally went with what they provided. DD had her sleeping bags and I assumed the sheets were cleaned similar to the ones used for our beds. For just one night we also often co-slept.

When staying with friends/family we took our own tavel cot (www.littlelife.com/products/travel-eat-and-sleep/arc-2-lightweight-travel-cot?sku=L10291&gclid=CjwKCAiA6seQBhAfEiwAvPqu15ZRvMWH4nvKemGakjN--wl1zEyvX1ZXSGGRM-ncDeWq6fveSJzaMhoCPYgQAvD_BwE0)
which was small enough to fit in a larger suitcase.

We twice hired a car seat and both times we had issues. And that was in our home country, so language wasn't a problem. Since then we always took our own car seat but we also always had a rental car, never did the transfer busses.

Didn't take a car seat. Baby was in a baby carrier.

Have never had an issue with a cot in a hotel but have found them to be less reliable in self catering/privately owned cottages or villas. I always take my own bedding though as it’s very rarely provided (usually made clear though).

We always take our own car seats if we’re hiring a car (rental companies never guarantee them) and there is no way I would consider a transfer with kids sat on my lap. Far too risky in my view. If we are using a transfer I always get the hotel to book and make very clear we need a vehicle with the appropriate car seats. This has never been an issue.

Caspianberg · 21/02/2022 08:13

Make sure you check if it’s a coach transfer. I have heard that they often don’t allocate a seat for under 2, so they would have to sit on your lap as no space for car seat.
I wouldn’t travel on a coach without a car seat
