Looking for tips for visiting Venice
Annonymiss123 · 13/02/2022 18:42
DH & I are going to Venice for 4 days in a few weeks. We’re staying in the Sant'Elena area. It’s the first time to Venice for both of us so I’d love to get some tips please.

I loved Venice, what a wonderful place to get lost in, just wandering all through the back alleys and streets. Meander, take your time.

Don't eat or drink within 200m of st marks sq, they are extortionate, you can't even sit on the steps! Lots of lovely little restaurants with good value set menus further away. Check the cover charge too and never buy anything without seeing the price some places are price gouging - it's a city known for ripping off tourists. (Yes we had issues!)
Go to attractions early as queues form
Take the water bus, it's very reasonable.
Visit the glass works across the bay

I was there last week. Masks are compulsory all the time, indoors and out, no exemptions - police stop you and tell you to put them on if you're not wearing it. They have to be FFP2 masks. You can buy them at the airport as you're not allowed on the buses, trains etc without them but they are expensive.
It's really empty at the min, our plane had 60 out and 88 back so not crowded at all.
They will scan your Covid pass everywhere and stop access if it isn't right. The water buses run really late at night so lovely to just get on and watch the world go by.

Venice is very cold in winter and it's the sort of cold that really get into your bones, so dress warm! Masks stopped being mandatory outdoors on Friday last week, but still are mandatory indoors, FFP2 on transport, plus covid passports ( Super Green Pass) for everything.

Due to go at Easter with DC, 7 and 10. If you have the Super Green Pass, do you still need to take a Covid test before going? What about the DC who are exempt from the Super Green Pass?

If you can't afford a gondola ride you can get the traghetto across the grand canal for about €1 each. It's a 2 minute gondola 'ferry' ride across the canal. You stand up but you can take photos of the gondoliers and say that you've been on a gondola!

If you have the time, take the vaporetto out to the island of Torcello. It was the original inhabited island in the lagoon, with the most astonishing Byzantine mosaic in the church. You used to be able to climb the bell tower too.
It was such an atmospheric place to visit, and felt very close to what the original inhabitants of Venice would have experienced.
Row Venice were amazing.
DO NOT forget to validate your vaporetto to key with every journey.
San Sebastian has a flooded crypt, which was very atmospheric.
Do go for a dawn walk.
We spent 11 days in Venice. I wish I was going back (DS 20 months would throw himself off the canal edges...)

Things are changing all the time, so just keep checking both the Italian govt website and the UK one.
As it stands if your booster is older than 180 days, you'll have to test anyway (every 48 hours if LFT, every 72 if PCR) in order for your SGP to be valid. (this is for non Italian tourists only)
