Can you tell I'm a camper and usually stuff bags into a roofbox? I'm having my first hot holiday in a gazillion years and I need help. With everything. Suitcases first though!!!.... so?

Hello, this thread is a little old and some of the recommendations might be out of date. Whether you’re looking for cheap and cheerful family luggage or you’d like to invest in a quality cabin bag, take a look at our round-up of the best suitcases (according to Mumsnetters) for more up-to-date advice. Presume you're flying to the destination? If so, would avoid hardshells as they are likely heavier empty than other sorts of luggage. Means you have to pack more carefully to stay within the airline allowable weight limits. Also soft-sided bags can 'expand' more when stuffed full.

Earlybird, bless your heart for humouring me!! Yes, we're flying, we want big suitcases so we can bring lots back (Disney etc) so wondering if the holdall type are better, still with wheels.

Wheels every time - you may not always be able to get a trolley! Make sure that at a push you can manage all your luggage without a trolley, just in case!

Wheels are a must. We took one each and even DS (age 5 then) could manage to pull a small suitcase on wheels. Plus, with the pull up handles, you can balance a large hand luggage bag on it which again makes it easier to drag through the airport. We got the cheap ones from tesco, tbh they've done a few trips and are fine.

thanks all

We got the cheap ones from Tesco's too - quite good

The five of us (DH, me, DSD (15) DDs (7 &5) took 4 x wheely cases, 2 x wheely carry-ons with shoulder strap option, packed one large holdall in luggage that DH wore rucksack-stylee on the way back, mini-dds took their little overnight bags on wheels (they hold a surprising amount if you sit on them) - so DH had 2 x wheelie cases, 1 x holdall, DSD & I = 1 x case, 1 x carryon balanced on top a la Peaches + 1 dd & case

In case of emergency, I also had my handbag, and as going through Customs I appeared to have a small department store in there, we reckon that's where the bulk of our baggage allowance went.
