Anyone travelled to from UK to Canada since borders reopened?

Hoping to go to Canada this Summer with vaccinated DC and my parents.

Obviously no idea what restrictions will be in place on their side then but travel agent has pre-warned us that they currently randomly select arrivals for quarantine until testing negative. I assume this is the case, even with a fit to fly PCR done in UK? Dreading this happening to one of our party.

If anyone has experience of this or travelling since border was reopened, I’d be really grateful.

Even Canadians who have taken a PCR prior to returning are still being pulled aside for “random” testing at the airport.

My parents went to Canada over Christmas to see family. They were selected for random arrival testing but didn't have to quarantine whilst waiting for their results.
They did have to have a plan for quarantine entered into ArriveCAN before they travelled but they didn't have to use it.

Helpful responses, thank you.

Yes we knew about the ETA.

Perhaps the arrival testing is rapid PCR then?

So sounds like we’d need a quarantine plan for ArriveCAN if things don’t change between now and then. Will discuss with our travel agent, thanks all.

Went to Vancouver & Toronto in October and it was a breeze. Back then, you needed to be vaccinated and show a negative PCR test 72 hours prior to departure. You have to fill out the ArrivCan app and apply for an electronic visa online (it was ~£3, if my memory serves me correctly). Have fun!

You don’t have to have accommodation booked for the quarantine plan in the scenario of testing positive. Just a plan in the event of what you would do if you were to test positive. I said that I would self isolate in the hotel.

Brilliant, thank you. I’ll research some local hotels to where we are flying in. Fingers crossed it’s all academic.

I agree with Hairbrush and also flew in October - a day after they "opened". We just said we would stay in the hotel that we had booked for the first night and that we would have food delivered etc. It is nothing to worry about. Re tests on arrival - I can't comment as we were not pulled over. Have a great trip :)

It's easy to do directly via the Canadian government website. No need to contact a travel agent.

I was in Toronto last weekend. We had to do ArriveCan paperwork (basically uploading your vaccine certificates) and self-declaring that you do not have Covid.

Ontario dropped the random testing and quarantine in the last month or so.

The mask mandate in Ontario was alive and well. We had to wear masks everywhere and it was not unusual to see people in the open air with masks. We flew Air Canada and had to wear masks - they even said we had to eat our meals in 15 minutes so we could put our masks back on.

Glad I read this as we fly to Canada (Vancouver) in July!!

FlyMeToTheMoonandMars · 28/05/2022 07:57

If anyone knows if Vancouver airport have dropped the random testing then let me know! I will research though.

I've never had Covid!

Hotchocolate19 · 28/05/2022 11:17

I’d be interested to know this too as we also fly to Vancouver in July.

AgathaMystery · 28/05/2022 11:24

We went last month. Had all our vaccines and all of us had Covid recovery passports too.

on arrival at YVR one DC was pulled for random testing. We showed the recovery passport and the test wasn’t needed.

i received random calls from the govt over the next 3 weeks asking if DC were in quarantine as mandated on arrival. Each time I said no, Covid recovery etc. we had no issues.

Hotchocolate19 · 28/05/2022 15:41

@AgathaMystery How do you get a Covid recovery passport and is it best to have one? I have Covid at present and have been fully vaccinated.

AgathaMystery · 28/05/2022 18:00

I think I went on the NHS app. I think I generated it after +ve PCR tests.

Hotchocolate19 · 29/05/2022 08:08

@AgathaMystery Ok, thanks. Don’t think I will be able to do that as we can’t get a PCR test now.

AgathaMystery · 29/05/2022 08:41

Oh bugger. Are PCR tests totally not a thing anymore? I think so long as you are fully vaccinated you will be okay. We did a big trip across the whole country and none of us caught it. I hope you have an awesome time!

Hotchocolate19 · 30/05/2022 11:07

@AgathaMystery Thank you. I’m sure we will have a great holiday.

FlyMeToTheMoonandMars · 08/06/2022 10:25

I'm flying to Canada next month (Vancouver). Only thing they need is the eta application, which will link to your passport, and to complete the ArriveCan app form so you can download proof of vaccination from the NHS app. They don't need PCR tests doing before your flight but you may be randomly selected at the airport for a PCR test. Need to have a back up plan in case you, or one of your party, tests positive. Travel insurance needs to cover this eventuality.
