Legoland Billund

Has anyone been to Legoland Billund?

Thinking of combining with a trip to Copenhagen.

Kids are 13 and 10. Would there be enough for them? They have fond memories of a trip to Legoland in Windsor when they were small and asked to go again. Though Denmark might be a nice trip.

Thanks

Hamburg is a huge bottleneck, and I'm sure there's been roadworks on the E7 through there for at least a decade!

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

Perhaps just Denmark, Germany Netherlands and sail back from Rotterdam? Otherwise you'll spend half your holiday driving *@Runningupthecurtains*.

Look at Miniature World in Hamburg. (Can't remember the exact name I'm afraid)

There’s a miniature world in Rotterdam too - I went there with 2 properly adult kids (one was on a semester in NL) and we all loved it!

Thanks @GiantKitten I will have look.
@Aroundtheworldin80moves I hadn't thought of inter-railing I'll look into it but the driving isn't an issue. With two of us sharing I had blocked out a rough itinerary (in precovid times) it was driving every 2nd or 3rd day and the longest drive was about 180 miles. It was breakfast, leave for next city, arrive at lunchtime, have the afternoon and full day in the next city and repeat. I was driving over two hours each way to work for 8 years and I did it up to 81/2 months pregnant so three or four hours every other day split between two of us is still a holiday honest!

If you wanted to get as far as Norway is quite possible without too much extra driving. We took the ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo, overnight so saves on accommodation costs, and the arrival through the fjord into Oslo is stunning, then there are several shorter options for getting the ferry back to mainland Denmark

We went when our DC were 12, 10 and 8. Started with three days in Copenhagen, had a day trip on the train to Malmö in Sweden, then drove over to Billund. We stayed at Lalandia, which had a brilliant waterpark. Highlight of Billund was Lego House, which was excellent for all ages, inside and outside. Legoland was fun too, not dissimilar to Windsor really, but we were 'lucky' that the day we had booked our tickets for was wet so we walked straight on to everything. Lego shaped chips in the Legoland hotel restaurant at lunchtime were also something my DC randomly remember!

It wasn't a cheap holiday, but it was brilliant and varied.

@SpaceDetective I want to go everywhere! I would love DS to be able to say been there to as many countries as possible but I worry that the more counties there are in the plan the more likely it is that travel restrictions will rear their head and scupper the plan.

Lio · 07/02/2022 20:09

We did something similar a few years ago when the Lego house was still under construction. We visited Copenhagen for three days then took the train and bus to Billund, which worked very smoothly. We stayed in Lalandia for three nights and got the package that included two days in Legoland. I think our children were about 11 and 14, Lego mad so if we'd only had one day in Legoland that would have been a mistake for us.

It seems the only ferry to the Netherlands from the UK is from Newcastle so that would mean a 700 miles round trip to be able to take our car. It is a similar distance from Calais to Rotterdam. I just want ferry from Harwich to Esbjerg.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/02/2022 04:55

I suppose it depends where you are in the country as to whether Newcastle, Harwich or Calais is the best crossing point.

But if you're arriving on a ferry in Esbjerg, that seems like a nice little town and there's some beaches and national parks in the area.

But you're right about COVID scuppering visits to different countries.

When we were in Malta last autumn, we could have gone on an, admittedly expensive, day trip to Sicily where you went over on the fast ferry then on a coach to look at mount Etna, followed by a couple of hours in a nice coastal area for lunch, beach etc, but we would have needed extra covid tests and new forms, passes etc plus I think it would have made return to the UK more complicated because we had been to Italy as well as Malta.

But for anyone who goes to Malta, you can do a day trip to Sicily from there.

@Runningupthecurtains - there are ferries to Rotterdam/Hook of Holland from Newcastle (DFDS), Hull (P&O) and Harwich (Stena)

Spindelina · 08/02/2022 07:01

We've been a couple of times, by train and bus. We preferred Hamburg (rather than Copenhagen) as a combo.

@Runningupthecurtains

We’ve done the Harwich-Hook of Holland crossing with Stena. It’s a tedious journey as a day crossing, but they do an overnight as well.

SpaceDetective · 08/02/2022 10:18

Yes, I wouldn't consider a day crossing but the nighttime one is a breeze, get dinner in Harwich, on the boat around 9, go to sleep, wake up, drive off the ferry.

Runningupthecurtains · 08/02/2022 10:22

@tizwozliz @GiantKitten
My brief Google only brought up Newcastle but algorithms had probably picked up on all the Denmark chat and the fact that DMother is actually in the North East and so choose the DFDS route to show me. I still not sure if a multi country trip is a good plan in covid times. We could fly to either Billund or Copenhagen and day /couple of days trip to Norway, Sweden and Germany from there. Ferry to Helsingborg and the Bridge back from Malmö or vice versa looks like a fun option. I might try to work out timings and costing for a couple of options and see what works best. I'm happy will the Danish equivalent of a Premier Inn - we will largely only be sleeping in the hotel rooms anyway so anything flashier would be a waste.

Does who has been to Copenhagen have accommodation recommendations? Would 5 days be too much?
I like to take my time in cities, hate feeling I have to rush around to get everything in😁

The ferry to Oslo sounds amazing too. Not sure we could fit it in.

We are traveling from Ireland so will definitely be flying, unfortunately no option for ferries !
