Things to do in Los Angeles when you can't walk very far!

Suggestions please!
I am off to Los Angeles later in the year. Any suggestions for the best things to do? Trouble is, I have quite bad arthritis and struggle to walk far, I need to sit and recover quite often! Any ideas on the best things to do that aren't very strenuous and where there are seats at frequent intervals!

Go on a lovely boat trip out from Balboa Island, you’ll likely see lots of Dolphins and Whales, also the Island is lovely, feels like a film set, nice restaurants and bakeries. Very small so hardly any walking required.

gogohm · 30/01/2022 09:47

Hollywood tour on a bus? Or how about renting a scooter

spanieleyes · 31/01/2022 20:19

Balboa Island added, as is a tour round LA. Also added a winery tour, trip to Universal and lots of eating out!

I've also got the Canyon Club and the Magic Castle on my list. After two years with no holidays, I'm going to pack in as much as I can!

This is ideal, you can go all over the place. I've never been anywhere less walking friendly, you need some sort of motor transport between points. Our experiences were that the bus and metro were not for tourists. The locals were very funny asking us what we were doing using them and to take care.

The Getty Center is nice if you like art, sculpture, photography etc. it is also up on a hill with lovely views. There are lots of benches around to sit on.

We had lunch in their cafe and it was really good fresh food. A bit pricey but we thought worth it.

You take a really cool tram up the hill to get there from the parking and drop off area.

I'd hire a scooter so you don't feel like you miss out on things like Santa Monica or Griffin Observatory. You can get them delivered to your hotel - one of my colleagues does this all over the place when we are at conferences

spanieleyes · 03/02/2022 06:43

I'm staying with a friend who drives so don't think we would do scooters ( we are both over sixty and a bit wobbly too!) but all the other suggestions are noted😁
We now have so much to do, I might just have to stay longer!

Oh, I didn't mean an e scooter, I meant a mobility scooter! You could hire them together like you see in Benidorm Smile

Hop on - hop off bus tours are great for seeing everything
They often throw in free stuff like Madame Tussaud’s which was surprisingly good
Farmers market was really nice as well
Santa Monica and Venice beach are flat and easy to walk around
Depending on how long your staying you could get the train to San Diego
I did that and spent a few days there
SD is beautiful very flat easy to walk around and the waterfront area is beautiful

JaneDoe7 · 03/02/2022 10:28

People drive everywhere and there is lots of parking so you should be ok.

The Magic Castle is great - just checking you know you have to have an invite to get in?

A mobility scooter would be really useful for Universal Studios.

There are some amazing museums downtown, The Broad is fantastic for modern art. The Last Bookstore is also a book-lovers dream.

If you want to get more under the surface of LA then LA historians Esotouric run really unusual and fascinating coach tours (some a bit gory!). They might not be running in person right now due to Covid but maybe by the time you get there!

We did a studio tour at Warner Bros, you go round on a big golf buggy thing, it was really interesting, they were filming Big Bang Theory when we were there but sadly didn't see any of the cast.

Rheumatoid Arthritis sufferere here. Everyone drives everywhere, not too many places to walk anyway, so it's a great city to have stiff joints!
Don't miss the Getty Villa Museum in Malibu. You need a reservation to get a parking spot, but it's not too hard to get one. It's a lovely compact museum with gorgeous views, too. The Huntington Gardens are a don't miss.. they're huge but you can stop and rest pretty much anywhere. The newish Chinese gardens are spectacular and have very good restaurants (recommend a reservation for those). Beautiful view of the lake while eating your dumplings. The Farmer's Market is great for a morning or afternoon idle, and it's full of tables and chairs to plop down on any time. So many good food stalls!

spanieleyes · 04/02/2022 20:13

We have an invite for the Magic Castle, so definitely going. Two nights booked up in wine country, I may have to sit down for that!

This might not be everyone's cup of tea, but there is a Fishermans Wharf type place in San Pedro. It is quite a nice town itself. The cruise ships come in there.

DH and I walked to the fish place. It is mostly Latino. They sell whole fish you pick on trays yourself. They weigh them and then cook for you. I think they immerse them in a huge deep fryer.

In any event it was delicious. We shared a fish and pulled the flesh off with fingers.

I would love to go back. There was parking there and lots of seating.

We really enjoyed it.

We drove all along Mulholland Drive. Spectacular views. We had a quick look around Bel Air too. Also Santa Monica.

I totality recommend the Getty Centre. It’s a sublime building. The Getty Villa at Malibu is a must. It’s not big but it’s a very special museum. I prefer Santa Barbara over San Diego. Go up Highway 1 and visit The Mission there.

The Huntington Gallery and Gardens are wonderful. The cactus garden was a highlight for me. Plus there are famous pictures in the Gallery. I was thrilled to see “Pinky” and “The Blue Boy”. I think there’s a great car museum in this area too. We ran out of time, but you may not!

Lastly check out The Max Factor Museum. It has the original make up booths from the 30s. Stunning. So are the costumes there. We lived a dress worn by Jean Harlow. There’s a Marilyn Monroe one too. I highly recommend it.

Americans sit down a lot. You’ll be ok.

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 11/02/2022 23:22

Definitely go to the Getty Centre. Amazing place.

spanieleyes · 14/02/2022 20:26

We have express passes for universal so no standing in lines and several wine tastings in Paso Robles, so scope for falling over!
Thanks for all the suggestions!

Dependent on time head up the coast to Santa Barbera and San Luis Obiscapo. Also if you get a chance Catalina Island is beautiful. I've heard Los Angeles has really been hit hard by the pandemic and there are more no go areas than before . You may be grateful to head out of the city . Have a wonderful trip .
