Wales - accommodation for 3-4 nights for 5 near the beach

Has anyone got suggestions for somewhere you've been in person?

Self contained self catering of any type is great but not always bookable for part weeks.

Happy with hotels, bed and breakfast, also fine with hostels as long as they have family rooms with private bathroom but am fussy about the set up - there need to be separate beds for each child - so three single beds and a double are ideal or bunk beds hostel style are preferable to two doubles and a sofa/ camp bed. Don't want two entirely separate hotel rooms but adjoining interconnected rooms would be great.

My absolute ideal is 3 bedrooms self catering or apart-hotel style. but bookable for less than a week.

Walkable to a beach and places to eat, with parking (or accessable by train if no parking).

I have found a couple of places on booking.com but nothing quite perfect.

Any suggestions?

Whereabouts in Wales?

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 28/01/2022 08:41

I'm quite flexible about where but have looked at Anglesey and Snowdonia so far. We'll be flying to Manchester and its part of a slightly longer trip.

I found perfect accommodation in Snowdonia but we'd have to drive to the beach - that's ok but I want to keep looking a bit more to be sure I'm not missing something ideal...

I was going to suggest the Gower or Pembrokeshire - but that’s SW Wales so guessing not what you’re after - shame Oxwich is particularly lovely!

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 28/01/2022 09:25

ElaineMarieBenes no area is completely out of the question, it just increases travel time on a relatively short trip.

Do you have a specific suggestion in Oxwich?

For the right accommodation walking distance to the beach its worth more time getting there. I'm not sure anything will tick every single box so compromise on driving for a couple more hours is no worse than compromise on how far from the beach we are...

There is a the lovely Oxwich Bay Hotel itself or they also do self-contained accommodation (including static caravans). The Penrice estate has lovely holiday cottages. As does Three Cliffs farm (best beach in the world imo - but you can walk it from Oxwich if the tide is out!).

Nearby Port Eynon has a YHA hostel on the beach where you can get family rooms etc.

Further afield there is The Druidstone hotel near Fishguard - and I’m sure there is plenty in between but I particularly love the Gower.

ElaineMarieBenes · 28/01/2022 09:38

For evening meals I recommend the King Arthur in Reynoldstone! Was there a few weeks ago and as lovely as ever!

ElaineMarieBenes · 28/01/2022 09:40

The accommodation mentioned is all either on or near a beach

ElaineMarieBenes · 28/01/2022 09:42

Sorry should say with the exception of the Penrice cottages - but all within 5/10 minutes drive of Oxwich (and you get free parking at the beach - or at least used to!).

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 28/01/2022 10:55

ElaineMarieBenes thanks! Have had a look - the caravans at the Oxwich bay hotel or the biggest family room at the yha hostel would both be lovely. Unfortunately no availability when we're able to go!

Anyone got other suggestions? Something to the north / within 3 hours of Manchester airport would be more convenient but open to ideas anywhere in Wales especially if everything else fits the bill.

There are holiday homes literally on the beach at Freshwater East, which is stunning. Again, South West Wales though. Good food on site and the excellent Stackpole Inn a couple of miles away.

Thanks NavigatingAdolescence - those only sleep 4 though.

1 on the sofa?

Not going to be easy to hit the size and beach proximity, I fear. :(

WouldIBeATwat · 28/01/2022 11:16

What date are you looking for?

MsInsomniac · 28/01/2022 11:17

Any holiday park caravan set up will have this, look at pendine sands in Wales, 2 twin bed rooms, a double bed en suite, self catering, walk to beach, Mon - fri bookings. Haven, parkdean, any of those caravan sites. You can just use the van as a base, no need to go to the clubhouse bingo!

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 28/01/2022 11:29

Sometime between 6th and 17th June WouldIBeATwat

NavigatingAdolescence yep I realise I'm awkward Grin I found something perfect on Anglesey but really too expensive and 3.5 km from anything except the beach, and perfect accommodation in Snowdonia but a drive from the beach.

Thanks MsInsomniac I'll have a look. We did once do that with a Haven caravan park but the caravan was quite shabby and the park quite loud. Maybe just bad luck. I'm happy to stay on caravan parks in theory - we had lots of good Eurocamp style holidays in Italy and France, but the Haven accommodation we once stayed in in England was depressing tbh. Maybe they're better in Wales...

I’ve stayed in loads, never had a problem with noise and last few caravans were lovely, with dishwasher, utility room with washing machine, decking with outside furniture and sea views, clean and issue free.

Lund · 28/01/2022 11:36

Might be a bit too far.... but we love Swallowtree Gardens in Saundersfoot - you can walk down to the beach in a few minutes - its a small, quiet place with caravans and lodges, there's an indoor pool which is great when the weather is not! They do short breaks during school term time, Worth having a look! This area of Wales is lovely, loads to do.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 28/01/2022 11:44

oh! On first glance that Pontllyfni one looks absolutely perfect WouldIBeATwat ! Will look in more detail, definitely a very good find thank you!
