Montenegro suggestions

Has anyone here been to Montenegro? I'm considering it for a family summer holiday with teenagers. Would it suit them? They like beaches, but also adventurous activities and nice food.
If it's good, any particular areas that might be good for grown up kids?

Following..l’m hoping to plan a holiday In September to Croatia and Montenegro

We went in 2019 and whilst we had a lovely time it wasn’t quite what I expected. A mix of very much places where locals go on holiday plus very expensive luxury resort developments full of Russian money and mega yachts.

We flew to Dubrovnik and got a taxi to Herceg Novi as taking hire cars into Montenegro attracts huge premiums. It was probably my favourite resort place. Lots of locals and the old town was very pretty. No beaches though - all concrete bathing platforms.

Then got a taxi and ferry to The Chedi hotel. The journey there was fabulous. The hotel itself was fabulous but the resort very quiet. Several restaurants but very sterile and full of tourists only. From there we visited Kotor on a day trip (fab) and Porto Montenegro (mega yachts and people watching).

We then got a cab to an inland airport and flew to Ljubljana for another week travelling around Slovenia. We drove round Budva on the way which looked really grotty but is supposed to have some nice parts.

So do your research. It’s not like Croatia other than in terms of general coastal scenery. It’s still very much developing in places. I mean, it’s worth a visit but I won’t be going back.

We did Croatia and Montenegro, 5 days Hvar, Croatia, 4 days Kotor Montenegro, and then Dubrovnik, Croatia for two, I wish we'd had less time in Montenegro, there were some nice parts, but Croatia was better. Sveti Stefan was a lovely beach, but had to pay to go on it I think, there were some good walks, and the walled city was interesting, but other than that, I definitely preferred Croatia.

We based ourselves in Kotor and travelled round with a hire car- driving was hair raising at times especially around the bay. We loved it and it was very cheap. We went on to Croatia and found Dubrovnik a bit meh in comparison (so expensive, so busy) so horses for courses I guess. Budva definitely one to avoid though!

@Rachie20 we really liked Budva but it was a few years ago. We stayed at Sveti Stefan before it was taken over by Amman Resorts and loved the area. We travelled around on the bus but at that time (around 2008) there didn’t appear to be much to attract teenagers . I believe a lot of Russians go there now .

A different country but same region - we went to Bled in Slovenia a few years back, absolutely beautiful!

bruffin · 28/01/2022 08:17

We stayed at the Kotor Vista apartments in Muo about 20 minutes walk into Kotor town. We hired a car and drove along the coast, up into the mountains to Centijne and to the national park etc .Like another poster Budva did look grotty when we drove through it.

Our Flights were to Tivat to pick up car and drive to our apartments about 15 minutes away. But there was a delay in our flights and we ended up in Podgorica which was 2 hour transfer. I think it happens a lot and they were very organised just not the best start to a holiday but i would go back

I'm going to Bled this summer!

Sorry, distracted. I only went over the border to montenegro as we stayed Croatia side, 40 mins from dubrovnik. Montenegro was closest shop to us but I discovered the food in their supermarkets was grotty so I drove 20 mins to Croatian supermarket.

I went to Herceg novi as it was so close. It was "ok". I think around the bay of Kotor would be nice. So pretty

Krk national park and around Split in Croatia would be good for teens I think. Split is a really lively city with lots of cool shops.

I've just booked a holiday for me and my teens in montenegro with "undiscovered montenegro". I found them through the ", responsible travel" website.

4 days of activities which I'm hoping will be good for my teens.

Thanks for these suggestions. We went to
Croatia a couple of years ago, and really loved it. But I would hope for a slightly different --
If not nicer -- experience this time. Please keep the suggestions coming

I honestly would look at Slovenia - it was the better half of our trip by far. You can do city break, coast, lakes and mountains all in one holiday. Driving around is easy and everything is very close to each other.

It was one of my most favourite European holidays by far.
