4 adults - same family group - can we all take separate insurance?

Myself, DH, DD and DS all travelling to the US soon. All adults. Group cover is coming in at £170 but if DH and I insure ourselves as a couple and DS and DD insure themselves separately it’s adding up to £100.

Is this ok? Surely as adults the ‘kids’ can insure themselves individually? Anything I need to be aware of?

I think my parents looked into insuring themselves separately rather than as a couple when my dad was ill and needed a more expensive policy.

They were advised that by not being covered by a policy as a couple they would not both be covered for cancellation if one of them fell ill and they couldn't travel, so might just be worth bearing that in mind if you are considering separate insurance for each family member.

I don't think we have ever had group or couple insurance always separate, I do have a pre existing condition so I've always just got my own.

This is not true of every policy. Many allow you to cancel if a “travelling companion” has to cancel, despite the fact that you have separate policies. I’m particularly careful about this as I’m single and tend to travel with friends. We did have to cancel a few years ago when my friend fell ill - I was refunded. You just have to make sure that you check the small print carefully.

Sorry, that was in answer to eleflump

How old are DD and DS?. Do either have a credit card?.

I would not mess about with insurance policies for the sake of £70 particularly if you are travelling to the US. I write that also as someone whose family has needed to navigate the world of US hospitals and associated costs on holiday. And yes they do ask how you are going to pay.

No, neither DS nor DD have a credit card. I see what you mean, so it’s in case they need to give credit card details for upfront medical costs, is that correct?

Payment for medical costs is agreed by the hospital and or you with the insurers in the UK often before treatment gets underway. Your dc need to be named on your policy.

One concern would be is would they pay for someone to stay on if someone on a different policy takes ill, and can't travel back.
