Parent escape: sugestions for 2 nights hotel (whatever) that will give rest & relax

Wanted! Suggestions for worn out me and DH escaping for the FIRST TIME on our own in 3 years. Somewhere 'South' but to the West of London. Home Counties to Cornwall.
Hotel / spa / coaching Inn doesn't matter so long as the rooms are clean and we don't end up with peeling wallpaper - near the sea prefereably.
It will be February so a log fire would be great.

Any suggestions?
Thank you

I'd say
Babington House
or

Driftwood just read a good review in Mr and Mrs Smith

What's the most important thing? And what are your criteria?

WideWebWitch · 28/12/2007 20:40

DON'T go to The Forbury, however great their website looks (and it does), the service is shockingly bad.

WideWebWitch · 28/12/2007 20:41

I know, what about Hotel du vin in Henley?

WideWebWitch · 28/12/2007 20:44

I like the look of Cotswold House but reviews are mixed on Tripadvisor.

WideWebWitch · 28/12/2007 20:47

I think Babington is the right mix of getting away from London but not driving too far. Driftwood is prob too far.

Really, really try to have 2 nights away if you can, it makes a lot of difference ime, when you get up you have a whole day and another night stretching ahead of you.

The most important is peace and quiet in the room, en suite, dinner on site isn't a main demand so long as there are restuarants / pubs nearby. Swimming pool would be nice but not compulsory. Nice gardens to walk around even if it's pouring with rain. You know, I really don't care - I'm sooooooo looking forward to it! It so 2 nights we are going for - the thought alone is bliss.

Not really wedding season but I suggest you ask when booking if there is a wedding booked. We have had 2 Saturday night stays at expensive hotels totally ruined by the noise of a wedding disco going on until midnight.

WideWebWitch · 29/12/2007 20:39

OK, do ask about noise when you book then, it's important to me too and for eg I found Drakes in Brighton too noisy because of traffic. Have a lovely time!

WideWebWitch · 29/12/2007 20:42

This also looks nice but is in the wrong direction. tuddenham Look at the rest of the Mr and Mrs Smith site too, it's good but be aware they don't really ever seem to criticise so check tripadvisor too for honest reviews and peoples photos.

Celtic manor near caerleon? Loads of nice local pubs with log fires in teh village for the daytime, easy as anything to get to as well. Not that i've been tehre you understand- just live in the sahdow and sigh with envy at those who go LOL
(has a spa and website) or indeed Babington house as previously suggested.

DH and I just spent two nights at Holm House (Cardiff) - it was fantastic, we couldn't criticise it at all.

Lots of gushing on Trip Advisor for HH too :

WideWebWitch · 29/12/2007 20:58

cor that looks nice Chonky. I do wish more hotel sites would show you the rooms properly.

chonky · 29/12/2007 21:03

Tis fabulous WWW. They even give you a present every evening - first night we got a good sized box of 'decent' chocs (yummmm), the second night I got Jo Malone eye cream and a small wooden boat, both given with handwritten cards from the owner. The service really is tops .

WideWebWitch · 29/12/2007 21:07

Y'know (sorry for hijack) that's what really gets me about some hotels, good service isn't that hard imo but so few do it. Sounds lovely, we want somewhere to go in Feb. Was it quiet? I want SILENT rooms. Or only the sound of the sea.

chonky · 29/12/2007 21:12

Totally agree on the service. All it is IMO is attention to detail, yet so many places just can't seem to be arsed.

It's very quiet, and our room had a good sea view. The Bristol Channel has never looked so good

You have all been great - thanks for the links; tips etc........
Sooooooooo excited

What about Balifscourt in Climping, Sussex? Near sea and lovely little beach. Has fantastic spa and good restaurant.... V romantic!

SquiffyonSnowballs · 02/01/2008 16:58

whatleymanor gets my vote so long as you stay midweek. Fabulous place.

Otherwise any of the hotel du vins - we've tried 4 of them and not been disappointed yet.
