Safest countries to travel alone??

Hi, I'm 23 and I really want to travel. I don't really have many friends or family and I don't have a partner so I don't have anyone who's interested in travelling. The destination at the top of my list is Japan. Is Japan safe to travel alone to? What other countries are safe to go alone to?

OP have you asked this before?

Yes it is. So is South Korea.

So are many others. Bad things can happen anywhere.

I felt very safe travelling in Canada. Beautiful country too.

I’ve traveled alone a lot. It’s really fun and I’ve felt safe in most places. I’ve not personally been to Japan but know lots who have and it sounds a good place to go.

If you’re nervous doing a tour with other people to start might boost your confidence, I recommend G Adventures.

Hostels are a good place to meet other solo travellers as well and the staff are usually helpful and can recommend things.

Thailand was very safe when I went travelling. It's very sociable with well worn routes via bus or train or internal flights. Loads of people travel on their own on their way to and from places. Tons of backpacker places to stay and meet people. Start off at khao San Road in Bangkok stay in a place in streets off that.
Get your bearings then start booking transport to the islands to dive, full moon parties etc like kho phanang, Kho Tao etc then Chang Mai for trekking. Pop over to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

Backpacker hostels around the world are usually the best and most sociable places to stay especially at your age.

I've travelled alone with my backpack around approximately a third of the countries in the world. I love it. I've always felt safe apart from a few incidents that were not specific to the country but more circumstance, and I was always able to look after myself even then. There are safe and less safe areas wherever you go, just do a bit of research before arriving to prepare. Solo travel is a fantastic experience and a real confidence builder. You also meet people along the way, which you don't tend to do when travelling with others. Some of my dearest friends now are people I met travelling.

I don't think any country is inherently unsafe, bad stuff can happen anywhere.
I think some places are harder to negotiate, and its also about your own personal tolerances. For example Egypt, I've been a few times and whilst I didn't feel unsafe as such, it was a bit wearing after a while. I personally wouldn't travel to the USA, my son is black, and I don't like the idea that I could be shot in the head by a stray bullet whilst lying in my bed. It feels very unsafe and hostile to me.
I've also travelled to places which horrified lots of people and been absolutely fine.
I think there are some basic rules, which apply everywhere, including here in the UK.

Stay somewhere decent, don't go off with people you don't know, don't flash expensive cameras, watches etc which make you a target for muggers. Everywhere has dodgy places, find out where they are and avoid them. Do your homework about local cultures and attitudes, eg if you are advised to dress modestly, then dress modestly. It sounds obvious but don't find yourself in a war/conflict zone. Again its about doing your homework.
There are lots of companies which do group travel. Exodus and Explore are two I've used a lot though the age group for these two is a little older, but google around for others. I've made some great friends on group holidays.
Good luck and enjoy your travels.

Japan is the most amazing country and I felt very safe there. Obvs, as a pp said, anything can happen anywhere, but Japan is probably one of the better places. If it's already at the top of your list I'd say go for it!

@Birdkin hey thanks for your advice. I had a look on the Website and the tours seem really interesting. Once restrictions have lifted for other countries I'll deffo look there again :)
