Wondering if anyone has recentish experience of Budapest? Is it best to stay near the river (although I’ve read good things about the Jewish Quarter). We haven’t been before so want to be convenient for the main sites. We are 50 so not youngsters but up for visiting a few bars, restaurants too.

Any recommendations for specific hotels would be great (thinking mid range, up to £100 a night??).

Is 3 nights enough?

What were your absolute highlights?

Thanks x

We stayed near the Jewish quarter and it is quite buzzing - not from from Deak Ferenc and the big wheel. We had an apartment though vs a hotel. The Ruin Bars were fab. Got the bus up to the Fisherman's Bastion and the cathedral. Boat trip on the river past the Parliament building. Gellert Spa. Heroes Square - in the summer there is a nice lake with pedalos, in the winter it's an ice rink. Margaret Island. The Central Market. Shoes on the Danube. We stayed here www.7seasonsapartments.com/ Lovely apartments but you can get breakfast and there are lots of grocery shops, bars and restaurants nearby.

We stayed here, it’s really central near the opts house, www.booking.com/hotel/hu/opera-garden-apartments.en-gb.html

Found it a good base to get around all of the city. You really have to try the spas and Margaret island! It my favourite city enjoy!

We stayed in the Hilton, which was lovely. Then moved to the Marriot Apartments round the corner as our flight got cancelled. I would have happily stayed there longer, basic but perfectly nice.
Szechenyi baths are good, ruin bars. it's a beautiful place.

We stayed here before Covid. It’s great value and centrally
located,

We stayed in the Prima Fashion Hotel. It was a great location for the river (beautiful at night with the buildings opposite lit up). Also, at the other end of the road turn right for lots of shops, left for lot of eateries. Lots of eateries about 7mins walking alongside the river as well. We didn't need to bother with transport as everywhere walkable.

We’ve booked into Clark hotel - was supposed to go in December but have rescheduled for May. Wine tasting in a cave bar next to Hilton is on my list of things.

We stayed at the Parisi Udvar, it was lovely. www.booking.com/hotel/hu/parisi-udvar-budapest-in-the-unbound-collection-by-hyatt.en-gb.html

Three nights for me wouldn’t be enough - it’s quite a big city and three nights would only give you two full days. You could easily spend a day exploring the old town/castle area, another day looking around the Jewish quarter, a few days at museums/galleries (I really recommend the House of Terror) and factor in at least one or two trips to the baths (I rated the Palatinus baths on Margaret’s island and not the more well known Gellert or Szechenyi baths which were full of teenagers, overpriced and dirty).

I’d say three or four days would be better if you can.

rookiemere · 14/01/2022 21:31

We stayed at the Continental Hotel - I would link to the website but it's cheaper on booking.com. Near the jewish quarter and has a nice outdoor pool area.

We stayed at the Great Western Moran hotel - NOT recommended.

Also second the ruin bars and that district for a few drinks. Other highlights was the ability to walk the city, the central market hall and the spa, which was a good half day or so well spent. Have a great time!

Just booked 4 nights in Feb half term to Budapest with two teenagers. Can’t wait!
Anyone travelled recently? The covid measures all seem fine - no extra tests or anything and no vaccine mandates for under 18s. Staying near the Great Market. Any tips or recommendations gratefully received!

I was 50/50 on house of Terror - interesting, but it got a bit annoying with the paper explanations. We liked Memento Park with the communist sculptures gone to die. You can do a bus trip from Deak Ferenc.
