I've not been abroad in two years - how does it work cancelling with covid?

As per the title, I can't get my head around how this all works. I know each company has their t&C's and time limits for changing booking but outside that is there such a thing as an insurance policy that will cover us if one of us tests positive and we can't go? I've only ever booked flights and accommodation separately previously but although loads of places offer free accommodation cancellation this isn't true for flights so are you better off getting a package? Helllp please. We only want to go to Europe for a week or so but it seems like a massive ballache.

Many airlines now offer a free change of dates and/or route up to 2 hours before departure. Otherwise you should check your travel insurance to see if it covers you for testing positive before departure, or get a new policy that does.

I’d say that the most important thing insurance should cover, right now, is testing positive whilst abroad. Will they pay for extra hotel isolation / for how many people if it’s a child that tests positive / does it also cover new flights. That’s where the biggest expense would come from. The most basic policy used to reimburse flight costs with a doctor’s note, so it shouldn’t be too complicated to find one that includes Covid cover.

Brill thanks. Good point about the coming back. It's a minefield reading through all the different policies!
