Hi does anyone have any suggestions as to where my DD & friends could go for a fun weekend / week away after exams so in main school holidays ? They're fairly sensible but don't drive ( we could take / pick up ) I'm not sure if they could travel abroad as under 18s even if that were a good idea ( too risky?) so where in the uk could they stay / hire? I'd been hoping they'd wait until next year! Thanks

Erm, I definitely did this in the 2000s, I don't think it's new!

There were some groups of teens in Salcombe on holiday last time we were there. There's lots to do there, beautiful beaches, nightlife and good food but not too raucous.

I would be fine with going abroad in normal circs but I think with Covid rules changing all the time UK is better.

@Flickflak

Seems very young for a girlfriends trip away. Can’t imagine the accomodation providers would be thrilled either. Why are kids being encouraged to grow up so fast?
Hardly, trips used to happen at 16 when few stayed for A levels, she is 17, hardly a kid and hardly growing up too fast.

The biggest issue we found is lots of places do not accept single sexed groups and those that do weren't what my dd was looking for.

Normally someone over 18 has to book and be liable, mine went to a caravan park by the sea at that age but I had to be overall responsible.

My DD went with a few friends to a hostel in Newquay last summer. They went out to dinner and learned how to surf. They bought a few clothes and played pool at the hostel. It was safe and Newquay was fine.

Our children has missed so much coming of age moments in the last few years we need to let them grow a little.

All hostels will accept under 18s, I would do your research and ring around. They are a safe place for the under 18s to go.

I went abroad at 17 as a group of 4 girls, just needed permission from parents before we went (I think). Not sure with how it all is currently whether that would be an option, but it was great!

I was also going to suggest Newquay.

It's not a hen weekend! Teens have been doing this for years. Nothing wrong with a weekend away at a youth hostel or campsite.

YHA hostels are good. I'm pretty sure Airbnb will be fine as long as it's your credit card that's on file.

Lemoncurd · 06/01/2022 10:45

Mine went with a group to a YHA hostel at 15 (August birthday, the rest were 16) and a larger group camping at 17. No problems at all, but the group are all very sensible, don't drink or pub/club.

Brighton is super fun - lovely shopping and places to eat, very picturesque and social media friendly.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 06/01/2022 14:17

Hostels are your best bet, one of mine did that at that age.

17 is def not too young! My DH went to Newquay on a lads holiday when he was 15 in the early 80s!

Tatapie · 06/01/2022 15:26

Thanks all, YHA hostels look perfect, Brighton or Cornwall would appeal!

Friends of my son stayed in the Youth Hostel in Rhossilli last year, and did lots of activities nearby.

goldensilver · 06/01/2022 17:08

When I was 17 we went to Ibiza for two weeks at the end of our exams. Two of the girls had turned 18 so they were the lead bookers.
They could pretty much go anywhere as long as they are sensible and have someone over 18 in the party.

goldensilver · 06/01/2022 17:09

Should also point out this was 25 years ago!

TheCatShatInTheHat · 06/01/2022 17:11

Airbnb. No one will know how old they are. You just jet yourselves in and out with a key from a key box.

SE13Mummy · 06/01/2022 17:25

DD and friends had a few days in an AirBnB and a week at a campsite after GCSEs last year. The AirBnB host knew they were under 18 as the booking was in DD's name and she'd been upfront about it from the outset. The host was fine about it and said she really appreciated them being honest then left them a lovely review. The campsite booking was made by another of the girls' parents but the campsite knew it was a booking for four 16-yr-old girls. There was no problem with it at all and DD said there were a number of groups of unaccompanied teens on the first night... a fair few disappeared the next morning because of the storm whereas our lot moved and repitched their bell tent at 3am. That was unexpected!

llansannan11 · 06/01/2022 19:27

Hope they have a lovely time. Agree about staying in the UK, Cornwall may be the better of the two you suggest.
